NEVADA COUNTY JURY CONVICTS CHASEN RYDER MCINTIRE OF FELONY HATE CRIME ASSAULT

NEVADA CITY, Calif. - Nevada County District Attorney Jesse Wilson announced that a Nevada County jury has convicted Chasen Ryder McIntire on all charges arising from a violent, racially motivated group attack that occurred in Grass Valley in December 2025.

Following a jury trial that began on June 2, 2026, jurors heard the evidence and on the afternoon of June 4, 2026, returned guilty verdicts on all counts.

The Defendant was convicted of:
• Assault by Means of Force Likely to Produce Great Bodily Injury (Felony)
• Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Felony)
• Conspiracy to Commit Assault and Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Felony)
• Exhibiting a Deadly Weapon (Misdemeanor)

As to the felony counts, the jury also found true the hate crime enhancement allegations, concluding that the crimes were motivated by the victim's race.

The convictions stem from an attack that occurred on December 3, 2025, in the parking lot of the Target store in Grass Valley.

Evidence presented at trial established that the victim was working in the parking lot when a vehicle carrying several individuals, including McIntire, approached him. Members of the group rolled down the vehicle's windows and began directing racial slurs toward the victim, who is African American, repeatedly calling him the "N-word."

One member of the group challenged the victim to fight. When the victim declined and stated that he was working, the group indicated they intended to attack him. Evidence showed that McIntire then brandished a knife, causing the victim to fear for his safety and attempt to flee.

As the victim tried to escape, one of the accomplices tripped him to the ground. The group then collectively kicked and struck the victim numerous times. After getting up from the ground, the victim was further subjected to abuse as members of the group continued to attack and spit on him.

A civilian witness corroborated key portions of the incident, including hearing the racially motivated slurs directed at the victim. As a result of the attack, the victim suffered significant injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

District Attorney Jesse Wilson condemned the violence and reaffirmed the office's commitment to holding violent offenders accountable.

"This was a senseless and brutal act of violence. Even more disturbing was the fact that the victim was targeted because of the color of his skin. Hate crimes strike not only the individual victim, but the entire community. Nevada County has no tolerance for racially motivated violence or for groups who believe they can intimidate, terrorize, or assault others based on race. We are grateful to the jury for its careful consideration of the evidence and its verdicts in this case. At sentencing, we will advocate for punishment to the fullest extent of the law.”

The case was prosecuted by Supervising Deputy District Attorney Casey Ayer and investigated by the Grass Valley Police Department. Detective Devon Bossi served as the lead investigating officer.

On May 14, 2026, the Nevada County Office of the District Attorney had the pleasure of joining more than 150 survivors, advocates, public safety professionals, and community leaders from every walk of life at the State Capitol for the Second Annual Statewide Survivor Advocacy Day. This was an incredible effort focused on ensuring victims and survivors are trained, supported, empowered, and prepared to elevate their voices to help affect meaningful change across California.

Nevada County was represented by Assistant District Attorney Lydia Stuart, Special Victims Unit Supervising Attorney Helenaz Hill, Executive Director Allison Bischofberger, and survivor River Rothacker.

A special thank you to the legislators and legislative staff who took the time to hear our stories, engage in meaningful conversations, and discuss how we can continue partnering moving forward. Those conversations matter.

The Nevada County District Attorney’s Office announces that on April 30, 2026, a Nevada County criminal grand jury returned a true bill indicting Jamie Jones, who currently appears to serve as Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, and Christopher Wackerly, who is listed as the organization’s Director of Field Operations, on more than two dozen felony charges.

The indictment includes charges of embezzlement, grand theft, money laundering, mortgage fraud, insurance fraud, perjury, forgery, and related offenses, along with special allegations that the conduct involved a pattern of related felony activity resulting in losses exceeding $100,000, an aggravated white-collar crime enhancement under California law.

This indictment follows a nearly two-year investigation. From the outset, our office committed to conducting a thorough, methodical, and impartial review of the evidence. While we recognize the significant public interest in this matter, we did not, and will not, compromise the integrity of the investigation to accelerate timelines based on public curiosity or internal preference. Our responsibility is to follow the evidence and get it right.

The grand jury found probable cause to believe that, over an approximately six-year period, the defendants engaged in a significant misappropriation of taxpayer funds. These funds were entrusted to the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County for critical fire prevention and community safety purposes, as well as other publicly funded programs and services. Additional alleged conduct includes misuse of public benefits, fraudulent representations to government agencies, and financial transactions alleged to conceal proceeds of criminal activity.

“The evidence presented to the grand jury indicates a flagrant misuse of taxpayer funds for personal enrichment and the use of organizational accounts as if they were personal accounts. That said, this is an indictment, not a conviction, and the defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence as this case moves forward in court.” – District Attorney Jesse Wilson

What began as an inquiry into whether grant funds were being misappropriated expanded significantly as investigators uncovered additional alleged criminal conduct, including complex financial activity involving multiple public funding sources. The breadth and scope of the allegations contributed to the length of the investigation.

We anticipate that both defendants will be arraigned on these charges in the coming week.

We also want to recognize and thank our partners at the California Department of Justice and our own District Attorney’s Office Investigative Unit, whose diligence and professionalism were critical in conducting the extensive work necessary to bring this case forward.

As with all criminal proceedings at this stage, these charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case was presented to the criminal grand jury by District Attorney Jesse Wilson and Deputy District Attorney Isaac Silverman.

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to a close, we would like to share meaningful progress in expanding access to trauma-informed care and improving criminal justice response.

Until recently, victims of sexual assault were required to travel to downtown Sacramento to receive a forensic exam in the immediate aftermath of an assault—adding a significant burden during an already difficult and crisis-filled time. That distance created a barrier, and many declined the exam altogether.

Now, through a partnership with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and Community Beyond Violence, these exams are now offered in Auburn—bringing care closer to home and improving access, coordination, and support for victims. Since this agreement went into effect, we have seen a measurable increase in the number of victims choosing to receive an exam. This progress supports both individual healing and a more effective criminal justice response.

Looking ahead, we are working through the Family Justice Center and Western Sierra Medical Clinic to expand access even further, with the goal of bringing these services to Nevada County.

This progress reflects strong collaboration and a shared commitment to expanding access to trauma-informed care. While highlighted during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this work continues year-round—advancing a more victim-centered approach and strengthening criminal justice response.

We are proud to officially announce the opening of the Family Justice Center in Nevada County 💙

On April 22, we gathered with our partners and community members for a meaningful ribbon cutting, marking a major step forward in how we support survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our community.

District Attorney Jesse Wilson shared: “Every year, local law enforcement responds to hundreds of calls involving domestic or sexual violence. Our office files hundreds of cases and our local domestic violence agencies receive thousands of requests for help. By bringing services together in one place, this Family Justice Center helps ensure victims receive compassionate, coordinated care while also strengthening our ability to respond effectively, hold offenders accountable, and improve outcomes for everyone involved.”

This center was made possible through partnership with and the collaboration of many dedicated agencies and organizations.

We extend our sincere thanks to our partners: Grass Valley Police Department, Nevada County Sheriff's Office, Nevada City Police Department, CHP - Grass Valley, Community Beyond Violence, and Nevada County, CA

Together, we are building a safer, more supportive Nevada County.

April is National Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month (NCAPM). On Thursday, April 2nd Western Nevada County’s local Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC-WNC) hosted a Child Abuse Prevention Month Kick-off Community Gathering. The District Attorney's Office was pleased to participate in a well-attended community gathering hosted by Nevada County’s local Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC), in partnership with the Community Support Network (CSN). The event was designed to raise awareness regarding child maltreatment, emphasize its preventability, and empower communities to support families and protect children through family support and community action to prevent child abuse and neglect. The event included CAPC’s Coordinator Alyssa Burke’s own story of overcoming childhood abuse and neglect along with a panel comprised of former foster youth and providers facilitated by Melody Easton and Jessica Ferrer covering many aspects of child abuse prevention in Nevada County.

Former foster youth and the community provider panelists answered questions and discussed opportunities for positive change. A memorial flag was presented, honoring children and youth who have lost their lives to child abuse and neglect. CAPC members also recognized local first responders for their dedicated hard work to keep children and families safe.
