Smoke detectors alert occupant to house on fire.

Early Monday morning, just before 4:00 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a residential fire in the 15000 block of East Pawhuska, south of Nevada. A-Shift responded with Engine 212 and Tanker 211.

Firefighters arrived within seven minutes to find the home well-involved. The single occupant was alerted by sounding smoke detectors, discovered fire and smoke outside the bedroom, and was able to escape through a bedroom window to call 911.

We would like to thank Milo, Deerfield, and Compton Junction for their assistance. VCAD provided patient care and VCSO assisted on standby.

This incident serves as a critical reminder that smoke detectors are essential and truly save lives.

Please join me in welcoming Willie Summerlin, who joined the Nevada Fire Department on April 20, 2026.

Firefighter Summerlin comes to us from Warren, Ohio, and previously served as a combat medic in the military. He is married and has a three-year-old son. In his free time, he enjoys running, working out, and cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the additional staffing increases in the 2026 budget, Nevada Fire will have a duty staff of 16 by the end of this year. This marks our first increase from a 13-person staff since the 1970s.

Yesterday B-Shift worked with Firefighter Yount on the basics of pumping a fire truck. Firefighters spend many hours training and learning the in and outs of driving and pumping trucks before they eventually test for a Driver position in the future.
