OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND | What does affordable housing really mean, and why does it matter?

Today, we’re launching Opportunity to Understand, a series created to share clear information about homelessness, housing, and the challenges facing people in our community. Understanding creates opportunity. It also helps build a stronger alliance for neighbors who are working hard but still struggling to afford basic needs.

Follow along as we separate facts from assumptions and take a closer look at the issues affecting Southern Indiana.

The New Albany Cooling Station will be open from 2 to 7 PM Tuesday, July 14, through Saturday, July 18, at Culbertson Baptist Church, 4007 Grant Line Road.

The station will be closed Sunday and Monday.

Thank you to the volunteer teams from St. Paul’s Episcopal, Love Unlimited, Mt. Tabor Presbyterian, Culbertson Baptist, Park Christian, St. Marks UCC, and Central Christian for helping provide a safe place for members of our community to cool down.

Our Outreach Specialist Autumn Reynolds spends her days meeting people where they are, building trust, and helping connect them with the resources they need.

In this video, Autumn shares what outreach entails. She also speaks to a hard truth: homelessness can happen to anyone. A full-time working parent. Someone leaving the hospital with no safe place to recover. A neighbor facing one unexpected crisis too many.

This work is about more than services. It’s about dignity, connection, opportunity, and standing together in alliance with people in our community. As Autumn reminds us, “In a blink of an eye, that could happen to any of us.”

The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana has been accepted into the inaugural Indiana Statewide Tenant Leadership Cohort, Class of 2026, through the Indiana Tenants Association.

This statewide cohort brings together housing advocates and tenant leaders working to strengthen housing stability, elevate renter voices, and support community-driven solutions across Indiana.

For HCSI, this is an opportunity to make sure Southern Indiana’s housing challenges are part of the conversation. The people we serve often face barriers long before they experience homelessness, including eviction risk, affordability issues, and lack of access to safe, stable housing.

This work helps us continue advocating for stronger housing stability, better resources, and lasting solutions for the people and communities we serve. Stay tuned for an opportunity to get involved!

HCSI is closed today in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, we pause to honor that history, reflect on the long fight for freedom and equality, and recommit to the dignity of every person in our community.

COOLING STATION UPDATE | A cooling station will be available at Culbertson Baptist Church, 4007 Grant Line Road in New Albany, from 2 PM to 7 PM during scheduled operating days.

For the week of June 14, the cooling station is currently listed as closed Sunday, June 14, through Saturday, June 20.

Please note that cooling station availability may be subject to change.
