All lives are precious. Every night in the United States, over 435,000 children and adolescents spend the night in the foster care system. In Massachusetts, there are approximately 10,500 children in foster care. These youth are not mere statistics in a category, each one of them is an individual person with a real name, face, personality, and future.

So then, why are these children in foster care? In a recent public opinion survey, 45% of respondents believed children were in care due to juvenile delinquency. Such is not the case. Rather, at no fault of their own, they have been placed in state custody due to:

Abuse – physical or sexual
Abandonment
Neglect
Predictive neglect – based either on abuse/neglect suffered by siblings or documented substance use of their birth parent/s.

Imagine…the pain, sorrow, fear, and uncertainty experienced by these children. In their adversity, these real youth need real hope and real love. The solution is not scientific, it’s relational. For the ones neglected, the ones forgotten, the ones in need, we must step up. The need for foster and adoptive families in North America has never been greater.

You can help meet needs by providing meals or clothes or babysitting. If you’re interested in become a foster or adopted parent, we can connect you with others on the same journey and provide resources to help you get started.

To rescue and restore. Modern slavery is where one person controls another by exploiting a vulnerability. Human trafficking is where a person is forced into service against their will. The control can be physical, financial, or psychological.

In the US there are 25 different types of human trafficking present. Victims are hidden in plain sight.

If you are in a situation where another person has control of you and you are forced into service, you need to tell someone immediately. Don’t have anyone to tell? Don’t give up. There is hope.

The face of abuse looks different on every person. Abuse isn’t always seen by bruises. Domestic abuse is defined as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading, and violent behaviour—including sexual violence, willful intimidation, or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one person against another. In the majority of cases, this is done by a partner or ex-partner, but can also be done by a family member or a caregiver/guardian.

Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to:

Coercive control: which is a pattern of intimidation, degradation, isolation, and control with the use or threat of physical or sexual violence.

Psychological and/or emotional abuse

Physical or sexual abuse

Financial or economic abuse

Harassment and stalking

Online or digital abuse
