As we celebrate Veterans Day, sharing it with our friends, families, and love ones, let’s all be grateful for the brave men and women who have and continue to serve our country. Because of their sacrifices we are able to enjoy the many freedoms we sometimes take for granted. From the IAC team, thank you for your service vets and a special thank you to the IAC’s own Ceuma Rosa for her outstanding service to our country. #VeteransDay #veterans #veteransday #veteran #veteranshelpingveterans #thankyouforyourservice #thankyouthankyouthankyou

50 years ago today the Immigrants’ Assistance Center was incorporated, 50 years ago our founders believed in the value of immigrants and the importance of inclusiveness. 50 years ago they believed an investment in our immigrant population is an investment in our community, our future, and our country. We hold these values to be true 50 years later and 50 years from now we will continue to do so. Happy 50th birthday IAC. #immigration #50thanniversary #StrongerTogether #newbedfordma

Given we regularly partner and support nonprofits throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, we are fortunate to see first-hand the critical work they provide our communities. We wanted to share this glimpse into IAC so you can too.

On this day, 14 years ago, 120 children (some breastfeeding) were separated from their parents when immigration officials raided the Michael Bianco factory in NB and arrested 362 immigrants. Out of this was born our Emergency Family Preparedness program, to make sure no child would be left without a designated caregiver.

(The workers arrested had been sewing backpacks and belts for the US military. Most were deported to Guatemala.)

Our Story

For over 47 years, the Immigrants’ Assistance Center has been the Southcoast region’s first responder to new arrivals, offering often confused and disoriented newcomers a trusted touchstone as they encounter the American experience. We are a place immigrants can turn to safely for help in essential tasks like applying for citizenship or a green card or a workpermit, seeking benefits for US-born children, finding medical care for elders, getting a getting a driver’s license, or more acutely obtaining legal assistance in the face of detainment or deportation.

As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, we service 9,750 clients, with a staff of 10 professionals and a cadre of volunteers. Our case managers are multi-lingual, speaking five languages, and multicultural, meaning they understand the subtleties of culturally-based dreams and fears. We are a point of access for immigrants to every type of social service publicly available in the Greater New Bedford Area. The Center helps non-English speakers access information and services and is a vital link between the non-English speaking community and all of the other public and private human service agencies and providers in the area. We provide Citizenship classes and assistance in completing the citizenship application, English language and civics classes, social activities and health services for elders, services for high school students and at risk immigrant youth, educational sessions for care providers, Know Your Rights campaigns to help protect against detainment, employer education services in case of Workplace Inspections, deportation services within the local prison, and a clothing and housewares pantry.

Good Day . Just a query. My Great Grandfather on my mother immigrated from madiera to USA 70 years ago. Lived in San Diego and had businesses and property. He passed away 51 ago of diabetes while in a trip back to madiera . My mom says with and we were discussing this. All I know my grandfather lived in San Diego for more that 30 years . What I want is do I qualify for citizenship in form of blood related or family related. I have no access to his copy of documents as whole family is based in South Africa , Cape Town. All I know is his full name. How do check this .
Nice work Helena and congrat's on your recognition by BCC
Good afternoon. I hope this message finds you well. My name is Flaviana Sandoval and I'm a graduate student in Boston currently doing my master degree in journalism at Boston University. I also work for the Boston University News Service and I'm currently doing a story about the decision by the American government of not renewing TPS for Haitian and Nicaraguan citizens living in America under the program. I would be very interested in contacting you for an interview about how this decision affects immigrants in the State of Massachussetts, and the work you're doing to help the communities affected by this. I'm also interested in contacting people who are directly being affected by this decision. It would be very important to hear their stories and have their voices that we believe need to be heard. I wanted to know if it would possible to have an interview with a member of your organization to talk about these issues. Please let me know if it's possible. You can reach me through Facebook or at my email: [email protected]. Thanks very much. I look forward to hearing back from you. Kind regards, Flaviana Sandoval.
