Volunteer Opportunities for February!
Spring is fast approaching and so are opportunities to help save Buzzards Bay!
Administrative Mailings
Tuesday, February 5 from 9:30am-2:00pm
Volunteers are needed to help fold letters and stuff and seal envelopes. You can commit to as much time as your schedule permits. We will provide all volunteers with refreshments and free parking passes for the Elm Street garage. To volunteer, contact Colin Zeigler at (508) 999-6363 x200.
Events
Buzzards Bay SWIM and RIDE - Flyer Distribution
Monday, February 11 to Friday, February 22
To "get the word out" about our important annual Buzzards Bay SWIM and watershed RIDE events, the Coalition distributes event flyers and additional brochures to local businesses. We are in need of volunteers willing to assist with the distribution in the towns of Providence, Fall River, Dartmouth, Acushnet, Rochester, and Falmouth. Distributing materials only takes a few hours, and you can choose a day and time that works best for you. We will supply all of the materials and a list of businesses. To volunteer, contact Colin Zeigler at (508) 999-6363 x200
Monitoring
River Herring Monitoring - Begins in March
Our Herring monitoring program is starting in March and we are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping monitor a staple of our natural environment, the river herring. Volunteers will check our electronic counters, monitor the location and remove any obstructions that may float down river. If you are interested please contact our Director of Monitoring, Tony Williams.
Baywatchers - Volunteer Sign-ups have begun!
Baywatchers is the Coalition’s award-winning program to monitor the health of Buzzards Bay and its harbors, coves, and rivers. Beginning its 27th year, the Baywatchers program is the largest, longest-running volunteer-based coastal monitoring effort in New England.
Responsibilities include:
• Consistently commit to one hour each week between 6am-9am.
• Follow scientific instructions and be agile enough to work on docks and piers along the water's edge.
• Attend a two-hour training to learn proper sampling techniques and receive testing equipment.
Be sure to sign-up through our volunteer application. More information will be sent out in early Spring, concerning trainings and monitoring schedule.
Community Engagement
Outdoor Exploration Assistant -Year-round (As needed)
Help connect people of all ages to Buzzards Bay by leading or assisting with our outdoor exploration programs. Help show people how to dig for quahogs, identify local birds, explore the shore and much more! Lead and Support opportunities are available as needed. If you would like to volunteer reach out to Rebecca Vasa.
Stewardship
Adopt a Reservation -Ongoing
Love the outdoors? Help us pick up litter, cut back invasive vines and shrubs, and maintain trails at our reserves in Acushnet, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and Wareham. Land stewardship activities are great for groups that want to volunteer. Contact us to arrange a group volunteer stewardship day.
Whatever you decide, please remember that the time you time you give is critical to our mission and is much appreciated by everyone here at the Coalition.
Happy to answer any questions. Please contact me anytime. Thank you!
Sincerely,
