Volunteer New Bedford

Volunteer New Bedford Volunteer New Bedford is a citywide initiative dedicated to encouraging volunteerism and community service.

Volunteer New Bedford is a citywide initiative dedicated to responding to community needs and improving the quality of life for city residents by fostering and encouraging a culture of volunteerism and community service. Created in 2008 with assistance from the Massachusetts Service Alliance, the GIVING Network (as the initiative was originally called) was a collaboration of City departments, regi

onal community organizations, and local agencies united by a common interest in promoting volunteerism in Southeastern Massachusetts. Renamed Volunteer New Bedford after the City joined the nationwide Cities of Service initiative in 2009, VNB continues to work with local organizations, government departments, and educational institutions to engage citizens in community service. Volunteer requests from city departments and local non-profit agencies are posted weekly on Facebook at Volunteer New Bedford, on the VolunteerSouthcoast database at the UnitedWayofGNB.org, and on Twitter to help more residents connect to service opportunities more easily, and a volunteer application form is available for download on the City’s website at Volunteer New Bedford. Volunteers who serve at non-profit organizations located within downtown New Bedford are eligible to apply for a Volunteer Parking Pass, which offers free parking in the Elm Street Garage and Zeiterion Garage while participants are working their volunteer shifts. Downtown organizations with volunteers who wish to participate in the Volunteer Parking Pass Program should contact Mali Lim in the Department of Community Services at [email protected].

A Repair Café is a free, community-based event where skilled volunteers help neighbors fix broken household items—such as electronics, furniture, clothing, and bicycles—to reduce landfill waste and encourage a sustainable, repair-focused culture. Similar to the Fix It Forward clinics we're running in New Bedford, Repair Cafes are a way to share skills and resources in the community. For those who missed the Fix It Forward knife sharpening workshop this past Tuesday, the Repair Cafe will be holding a knife sharpening class this coming Saturday. Learn valuable skills and meet others interested in promoting sustainable ways of living!

Help for São Vicente, Cape Verde

Most of us know of the damage that the island of São Vicente and Santo Antão suffered after Hurricane Erin unexpectedly hit the island of Cape Verde. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, families have lost everything and many are displaced.

The Missions Ministry of The International Church of the Nazarene is working with district churches in the U.S. and Cape Verde to collect and send desperately needed items on Thursday, August 21st, to ship to Cape Verde the first week in September.

The following items are needed:
 Non- perishable food
 Hygiene Products- soap, toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo & menstrual items
 Gently Used Linen
 Gently used shoes
 Kids and Adult diapers
 School supplies

You can drop off these items at:

Dept of Community Services Room 113-City Hall

Do you have just a few hours to spare this week to do an act of kindness for a neighbor? Are you looking for a special family activity?

Lasagna Love has many requests for meals for families in need in New Bedford and the surrounding area and we don't have enough volunteers to handle these requests. Would you consider just signing up for "one time only" to help us feed your neighbors?

If you sign up today, you will be matched with a family this week to cook and deliver a meal. If you love the experience, you can continue. If it doesn't work for you, we understand! (We think you’ll love it!)

Help us feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.

Are you the neighbor who needs a little kindness?

If you are in need, whether it be financial, health related or emotional, please request a complimentary meal for your family and a neighbor volunteer will deliver it to your door in a contact free way!

Or nominate a teacher, a healthcare worker, local first responders, a friend who is housebound, a neighbor recovering from an illness, a family member who has lost his job. No questions asked and no judgements are made. Your area Lasagna Love volunteers are ready to lend a hand!

Lasagna Love is a global nonprofit and grassroots movement that aims to positively impact communities by connecting neighbors through gestures of kindness and support. We aim to help address the incredible rise in food insecurity among families but also to provide a simple act of love and kindness during a time full of uncertainty and stress. We also seek to eliminate stigmas associated with asking for help when it is needed most. Our mission is simple: feed families, spread kindness, and strengthen communities.
