Volunteer New Bedford is a citywide initiative dedicated to responding to community needs and improving the quality of life for city residents by fostering and encouraging a culture of volunteerism and community service. Created in 2008 with assistance from the Massachusetts Service Alliance, the GIVING Network (as the initiative was originally called) was a collaboration of City departments, regi

onal community organizations, and local agencies united by a common interest in promoting volunteerism in Southeastern Massachusetts. Renamed Volunteer New Bedford after the City joined the nationwide Cities of Service initiative in 2009, VNB continues to work with local organizations, government departments, and educational institutions to engage citizens in community service. Volunteer requests from city departments and local non-profit agencies are posted weekly on Facebook at Volunteer New Bedford, on the VolunteerSouthcoast database at the UnitedWayofGNB.org, and on Twitter to help more residents connect to service opportunities more easily, and a volunteer application form is available for download on the City’s website at Volunteer New Bedford. Volunteers who serve at non-profit organizations located within downtown New Bedford are eligible to apply for a Volunteer Parking Pass, which offers free parking in the Elm Street Garage and Zeiterion Garage while participants are working their volunteer shifts. Downtown organizations with volunteers who wish to participate in the Volunteer Parking Pass Program should contact Mali Lim in the Department of Community Services at [email protected].

People have been calling City Hall asking for ways they can volunteer during the COVID-19 outbreak. As we hear of opportunities, we'll post here as often as we can. Thank you to all those in the community who are willing to help!

Today's post is from the Greater New Bedford Medical Reserve Corps:

During the current outbreak of COVID-19, it is critical that we maintain connection with each other and with the resources that keep our community strong. GNB Allies is working with the New Bedford Health Department to coordinate a list of volunteers who may be willing to support the Greater New Bedford Medical Reserve Corps, as well as volunteers to call isolated elderly residents for 10 minutes each day. Please email [email protected] if you’re able to help these important efforts. We appreciate your support at this difficult time!

PLEASE NOTE: INTERESTED VOLUNTEERS SHOULD CONTACT GREATER NEW BEDFORD ALLIES AND THE MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS DIRECTLY. Volunteer New Bedford is simply used for sharing information about volunteer opportunities - we are not involved with interviewing or scheduling volunteers.

Access to FB has been tough since internet security measures got tighter last year, but Volunteer New Bedford will start posting again as much as possible.
