Our thoughts and prayers go out to the City of Boston this weekend. A difficult weekend for multiple departments.

Boston EMS is mourning the loss of Superintendent-in-Chief John Gill. As well as Boston Fire mourning the LODD of Firefighter Robert Kilduff, Jr.

Both served the City of Boston for years with distinction and honor. Our sincerest condolences are with the City of Boston as they navigate this loss.

This week, May 17th to May 23rd is EMS week!

Started in 1974 by President Gerald Ford the 3rd week of May was designated as EMS Week. Implemented to recognize and celebrate EMS providers across the nation for the work and care they provide daily to their communities.

As with every year on EMS week there is a theme, this year is improving outcomes, together. Highlighting the importance of the collaborative efforts that makes EMS what we know it is today. Investing in continuing education, mental health resources as well as leadership that listens and acts.

This week we intend to pull back the curtain and show you a little more behind the scenes of New Bedford EMS and what makes us who we are and what we have been doing to improve outcomes, together.

Happy Mother’s Day from us here at New Bedford EMS!

To the moms that fill our ranks, including the dog moms and Team Moms. Leaving your loved ones at home to come and provided the compassionate care EMS demands every shift. We thank you and recognize you today.

A special recognition to the moms of all our providers, who raised children who now go out and work in a demanding field supporting and caring for others in their time of need. We thank you as well!

As nurses week comes to an end we want to take a minute to recognize all of the nurses out there. But a special recognition to the nurses at Southcoast Health St Luke’s ER and Trauma center!

These professionals are the ones who continue the care our community has come to expect once a patient arrives at the Hospital, and they execute it flawlessly! The partnership between St Luke’s and New Bedford EMS has been strong for years, and only continues to grow!

A career in healthcare is not always easy, but is easier for us due to having a team of such dedicated nurses to work along side!

Today, April 26th marks 50 years of continued service for New Bedford EMS and the City of New Bedford

New Bedford EMS began operating as the first independent municipal EMS service in the state of Massachusetts. Often referred to as a “third service” this separated Emergency Medical Services from the Fire Department and Police Department, many communities followed this model after New Bedford paved the way. Starting originally with a staff of 18 basic EMT and two ambulances operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week, New Bedford EMS now employs 92 providers of various certification levels and operates 7 ambulances daily.

Over the years there have been many changes that have altered the look of New Bedford EMS from vehicles, ambulances and the equipment and technology in the vehicles and ambulances. Growing with the ever-changing healthcare industry has never not been an option for New Bedford. Within the last year the Department has been able to continue to grow and embrace the changes. We obtained and placed 8 Zoll Automated Ventilators into service, 3 new ambulances, and most recently purchased Sapphire Infusion pumps which will allow our providers to administer more mediations to our patients.

“The years have changed and the technology has changed, but the one thing that has never changed is our commitment to the residents and visitors of the City” Director Thomas stated. “Over the years, New Bedford EMS has had to adapt to many hardships, from financial burdens to workforce shortages. However, due to the diligent work of those before us and those who will come after us, I am confident that its level of service will never decrease, but rather always rise to meet the demands”

50 years have come and gone in the blink of an eye. New Bedford EMS remains committed to a standard of excellence and making a difference in the City of New Bedford.
