🚨 **PENNDOT ROAD CLOSURES ALERT — UNION COUNTY** 🚨

(NEW) Route 1001 (Johnson Mill Road) between Route 192 (Buffalo Road) and Route 2001 (Buffalo Run Road) in Buffalo Township, for flooding.

(NEW) Route 2001 (Buffalo Run Road) between Route 192 (Buffalo Road) and Route 1001 (Johnson Mill Road) in Buffalo Township, for flooding.

Route 3003 (Millmont Road) between Lynn Street and Route 45 (Main Street) in Harleton in Limestone Township, for flooding.

Route 3010 (Swengel Road) between Route 45 (Old Turnpike Road) and Thomas Road in Limestone Township, for flooding.

PennDOT cautions drivers to never drive through flooded roadways, as it takes just two feet of fast-moving water to float a car. Anyone who drives around barriers intended to close a road can face increased penalties if emergency responders are called to rescue motorists who disregard traffic control signs.

🚨⚠️ SCAM ALERT! ⚠️🚨
📢 Important information from Union County Planning — Please be aware and stay alert! 🛡️

Numerous county planning agencies in Pennsylvania have learned that scammers are posing as planning officials sending phony letters or e-mail messages urging recipients to settle fictitious debts or pay purportedly government-related fees and invoices.

In some cases, scammers have gleaned information from public documents, meeting minutes, or recent subdivision and land development applications.

The Union County Planning Commission handles all billing the old-fashioned way: on paper sent via the US Postal Service. Individuals may call our Office at 570-524-3840 to verify the legitimacy of any quoted fee or invoice.

We have no evidence this has occurred yet in Union County, but we wanted to proactively warn our constituents about reports from other counties. Individuals should check with the appropriate agency/office before paying any fee or invoice allegedly quoted by a government authority, particularly if received by email.

The SEDA-COG Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is gathering public input for the MPO’s next Active Transportation Plan (ATP)

The ATP will examine active transportation needs and identify projects and strategies for addressing the established needs.
They are inviting the public to complete an online survey to share your active transportation concerns and priorities for shaping the next ATP

An easy-to-use mapping tool allows you to pinpoint specific locations and provide comments directly on the map. The public survey is open until Sept. 14, 2026

WNEP’s Joe Snedeker’s annual “Go Joe” bike rides (this Wednesday) through Snyder County will intersect with New Berlin’s 1813 Courthouse which served Snyder County from 1813 to 1855.

Be at the old Courthouse in New Berlin (Post Office at Market & Vine Streets) at 1:45pm on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 as Joe Snedeker pauses his afternoon ride at the old Courthouse and New Berlin Heritage Museum.

Joe Snedeker’s 2026 ride benefiting the Joseph’s Center in Scranton departs the New Berlin Courthouse at 2:00pm. The Museum will remain open to visitors until 3:00pm. No entrance fee as usual.

🚨A Message from the New Berlin Borough Police Department🚨

Our senior citizens are among the most valued members of our community. They have helped build the neighborhoods you call home, and their safety and well-being are deeply important to us.

Unfortunately, scams and fraud targeting older adults continue to increase. Criminals use phone calls, text messages, emails, social media, and even impersonate trusted organizations or family members in an attempt to steal money and personal information. These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can happen to anyone.

Recently, we've seen an increase in our valued New Berlin seniors stopping by the Borough Office & PD or speaking with our officers while they're on patrol to ask whether an email, text message, or social media link they received is legitimate. We want you to know that we are always happy to help. We'd much rather answer a question than see one of you become the victim of a scam.

In response, we've worked to gather a variety of educational resources that are now available to our community. We now have flyers and information packets in our office covering today's most common online scams, fraud schemes, and ways to protect yourself. These materials are available free of charge, and we encourage anyone with questions or concerns to stop in and pick them up.

We're also excited to share information about a FREE online webinar designed to help older adults, family members, caregivers, and anyone interested in learning how to recognize and avoid today's most common scam - see information below -
We hope many of our residents will take advantage of this opportunity to stay informed and protect themselves.

We also encourage family members, friends, neighbors, and caregivers to stop by our office for resources, attend the FREE online webinar and share them with the seniors in their lives. Fraud prevention is most effective when we work together and keep the lines of communication open.

If you ever receive a suspicious phone call, email, text message, or social media message asking for money, personal information, passwords, or gift cards, take a moment to pause before responding. If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and ask for help. Our officers and staff are here to answer questions, provide guidance, and help determine whether something appears legitimate.

Education is one of the strongest tools we have in preventing fraud. Just a few minutes spent learning about today's scams can protect your finances, your identity, and your peace of mind.

Together, through awareness, education, and looking out for one another, we can help keep New Berlin a safe place for everyone.
