Recently, our local fire departments performed the necessary task of hydrant flushing and testing in our District. This is an important preventive maintenance activity that verifies proper operation of the hydrants and ensures adequate water flow will be available if the need for firefighting arises.

When hydrant flushing occurs, you may notice slightly yellow, orange, or brown-colored water coming from your faucet. Sediments and compounds such as iron and manganese can make the water discolored as it is stirred up in the pipes. This temporary discoloration only affects the appearance of the water, it does not cause a health or safety risk.

Discoloration may linger for a few hours. If this happens, run your cold water tap for a few minutes until the water is clear. If it continues, please call our office so we may flush your area.

BRIDGETON – First Craven Sanitary District is a Sanitary District government created and established by the North Carolina Commission for Health Services, Department of Human Resources on May 6, 1978. The Sanitary District was created to provide much needed public water service to the Town of Bridgeton and surrounding areas after a petition was presented “comprising of a total of 23 pages of signatures, purporting to be 51% or more of resident freeholders within the proposed Sanitary District.”

The water system first produced water on November 3, 1982 and served approximately 800 accounts. The $1.25 million water bond, voted in favor for by the people in 1979, issued in 1982, and payable over 40 years, was officially paid in full at the District Board’s May 2021 meeting.

Today, the District boundaries and water system have grown to include all of Township 2 of Craven County, except for the Fairfield Harbor Community. The water system now serves a population of over 6,000 residents with over 2,500 accounts. The District is not tax-funded; it relies solely on revenue generated from the sale of water. At present, the staff consist of 4 full-time employees. The District is governed by the Sanitary District Board of Directors, who are elected and serve 4-year terms.

The goal of the District has always been to provide the community with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water at a reasonable price. At the 1982 dedication the motto “service to the people of this District” was used and it is still true to this day.

COVID-19 Update
May 05, 2020

First Craven Sanitary District continues to provide its citizens with safe and a dependable water supply during these difficult times. According to the Environmental Protection Agency:

"There is no higher priority for EPA than protecting the health and safety of Americans. EPA is providing this important information about COVID-19 as it relates to drinking water and wastewater to provide clarity to the public. The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual. EPA also encourages the public to help keep household plumbing and our nation’s water infrastructure operating properly by only flushing toilet paper. Disinfecting wipes and other items should be disposed of in the trash, not the toilet."

First Craven Sanitary District will continue to provide the best service possible. In order to protect our employees and better serve our customers, the following actions have been taken:

1. The office has reopened for walk-in business transactions. We still encourage the use of the drop-box by the door, US-Mail, or online services for payments. Due to space limitations, we will try to limit one customer in our lobby at a time.

2. The monthly District Board meeting scheduled for May 12th at 6pm will be held at Tri-Community Voluntary Fire Department on St. Delights Church Road to allow for recommended social distancing.

3. In accordance with Executive Order 124, disconnections for nonpayment and reconnection fees for residential customers have been suspended for the months of April and May 2020 to assist with financial hardships. We encourage our customers to continue to make payments, or at least partial payments whenever possible. The District is funded solely by revenue received from the sale of water. Customers who need an extension beyond May will be given an opportunity to sign up for a payment plan. Details will be made available during the month of May.

If there are any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 252-633-6500 or email us at [email protected]

It is always a good idea to turn off the water to your home if you evacuate. Falling trees and flooding during Florence caused many breaks and leaks, causing more damage and high bills. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water was lost, putting stress on our system which was on generator power. Take appropriate precautions and stay safe.
