New Bern, Craven County, NC African American Sculpture Installed

I think it costs over $200,000 through a grant from the Reynolds Foundation if I am remembering what I read. It looks somewhat different from the rendering that I saw a couple years ago.

People were upset about the location and some were not happy with the design if I remember correctly. Plus the fact of it costing over $200,000.

To me art is supposed to communicate and this doesn't communicate anything about Catherine Bishir's excellent book "Crafting Lives" about the black artisans of New Bern.
It communicates Beam Me Up Scotty!

It would seem that $200,000 would have been better invested and a more complete story shared in a New Bern African American Museum that a local group has been trying to get going.

Both the City of New Bern, NC Government under Mayor Jeffrey Odham and Craven County NC under Denny Bucher have not done anything to help in opening an African American Museum. Craven County somehow found $9 Million of our Taxpayer Bucks for the Sudan Shrine destruction project.

The American Revolution In North Carolina. This was an interesting and informative episode. Thanks to Cousin Sandy for letting us know about it.

In North Carolina, the American Revolution looked more like a civil war.

"The following search is based upon the book Marriages of Craven County, 1851-1908, & Marriage Bonds, 1773-1868 abstracted by Jo Ann Ernul Murphy and Eula Pearl Beauchamp (privately published, 2006, now out of print).

This site contains an index to the Marriage Registers of Craven County Books 1 through 7 (indicated by a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7) and the Marriage Bonds of Craven County Volumes 1 through 3 (indicated by Vol. 1, Vol. 2 or Vol. 3). These books are housed at the Craven County Register of Deeds office in New Bern, North Carolina. The original marriage bonds are housed in the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. Additional information may be available in the original registers (including witnesses, ages, places of residence, and for Books 3 and 4 the names of parents).

Due to requests to republish the book, the authors generously allowed the library to place their database on this website."

Good Morning Everyone, This is a very worthwhile project which is greatly needed here in New Bern and Craven County. In April 2026, I attended the Craven County NC Commissioners' Meeting to speak on another topic and heard Ms. Cleopatra Hargett-Lawton, Rev. Robert Johnson, and Dr. Kwasi Foluke, MD speak in favor of establishing an African American Museum in the unused F. R. Danyus School which is the site of the historic West Street School. I was SHOCKED to find out last month that the Craven County Comissioners decided without any public discussion to no longer record any of the general public comments thereby depriving the public of hearing their thoughts and concerns. I will post a link in the comments of a short video I made about them EXCLUDING public comments. All The Best, David
