❤️ Sometimes, a few words say it all.

“RCS, you guys are amazing. Thanks for being so good to me.”

This handwritten note was recently left by someone who once stayed in our shelter — and who now gives her time back to RCS as a volunteer.

We could tell you about the meals served, the groceries distributed, the shelter nights provided and the people we've helped.

But sometimes, this is the reminder we need most:

**What we do matters.**

To the person who needs a safe place.
To the family who needs groceries.
To the neighbor who needs a little help getting through a difficult season.
And sometimes, to the person who comes back later and helps someone else.

Thank you for this note. And thank you for reminding our team why we do what we do. ❤️

🚐 Operation Outpost is Headed to Havelock This Week!

This week, RCS is bringing its mobile food distribution to Havelock, helping make nutritious food more accessible to our neighbors right where they are.

Operation Outpost brings fresh and shelf-stable food directly into communities across Craven & Pamlico counties — because sometimes getting to the food pantry isn't easy. We believe food assistance should be accessible, convenient and available to the people who need it.

Join us for the 2026 New Bern Area CROP Hunger Walk on the last Sunday in September and help us fight hunger—one step at a time.

Sometimes, a community service requirement turns into something much more.

At RCS, we believe our community is strengthened when people are given opportunities to contribute, learn, grow, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

Recently, one of our community members who has spent time serving alongside us reached out for character references as they pursue a new employment opportunity.

And our answer was an easy one: yes.

Because RCS is more than a place to complete community service hours. It’s a place where people become part of a community. Where relationships are built. Where contributions matter. Where people are encouraged and, sometimes, reminded of their own potential.

We were proud to speak to this individual's character—not simply because of the hours they completed, but because of the person we’ve gotten to know through their time with us.

We believe in second chances. We believe in meaningful opportunities. And we believe that when people are given the chance to contribute, they can make a difference.

Sometimes, serving others changes more than the people being served. ❤️

A Fresh Start: Our newest family at RCS was all smiles this week—and we couldn't be happier to see it! ❤️

From new haircuts provided by one of our amazing staff members to carpooling until bus transportation is finalized, this family is settling into a new routine and starting the school year off right.

And this is a big transition for these kids. They’re not only new to their school—they’re new to the entire school district and community, having come to us from another county.

That’s why our Family Shelter is about so much more than providing a safe place to sleep.

For children, it means having a safe, stable place to wake up each morning. It means getting to school, having clean clothes and a fresh haircut, knowing where they’ll be sleeping that night, and having adults around them who are helping their family move toward stability.

Sometimes, the little things—a ride to school, a haircut, a helping hand—are what make a new beginning feel possible.

We’re grateful to be part of this family’s fresh start. 💙

💰 LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS STICK TO THE BUDGET.

That’s why financial literacy matters. Knowing how to budget, save, manage debt and prepare for the unexpected can make a real difference — and you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

We’re so grateful for our friends at First Citizens for partnering with us to bring practical financial education to our community!

Earlier this month, nearly 20 people joined us for our first Financial Literacy Class — arriving early, staying late and actively engaging throughout. It was an incredible turnout and a great reminder of how much our community wants access to this kind of information.

And we’re doing it again!

⚾️ Boots vs. Badges is Back — And It's Helping Fill Our Pantry!

New Bern’s first responders are stepping up to the plate for a great cause!

Join us for the 9th Annual Chief Robert Boyd Boots vs. Badges Charity Softball Game, as City of New Bern Fire-Rescue takes on the City of New Bern, NC Police Department!

🎟️ Admission is FREE with a donation of a nonperishable food item!

Every food donation collected at the game will benefit RCS and help provide food to individuals and families right here in our community. ❤️
