Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

“⚠️ High Fire Danger across North Carolina this Saturday per North Carolina’s Weather Authority
Dry air, strong winds, and low humidity will create dangerous fire conditions statewide.
Even a small spark can turn into a large incident quickly.
Please avoid any outdoor burning and use extra caution.”

🚩 🚒 High Fire Danger Saturday: Red Flag Warnings have been issued for some areas, and there is high fire danger for the entire state on Saturday. The cold front will usher in very dry air, and winds will be Northeast at 10 to 25 with gusts at times up to 30-40MPH and very low relative humidity in the 10s and 20s % will result in very high fire danger across the state. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, contribute to extreme fire behavior. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

🚨 Here is the latest weather forecast from the national weather service!

A strong winter storm system is expected to impact our area this weekend — bringing significant snow, cold temperatures, and hazardous conditions.

🔹 Snow is likely to begin late Friday into Saturday with accumulation possible throughout the day Saturday.
🔹 Travel conditions could become dangerous with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.
🔹 Temperatures will stay very cold, especially Saturday night into Sunday morning — increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia if you’re exposed to the elements.
🔹 Roads, sidewalks, and driveways may be slick and hazardous — please exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

We encourage everyone to:
❄️ Plan ahead and dress appropriately for cold conditions
🚗 Avoid travel if possible during the peak of the storm
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility
🐾 Protect pets and livestock from extreme cold

We’ll continue to monitor this system and share updates as more information becomes available. Stay warm and stay safe

An intense winter storm is forecast to impact eastern North Carolina, bringing a threat of snow totals, possible blizzard conditions, and coastal flooding. Prolonged cold conditions will last well into next week. Read More >
