New Bern Area MPO

New Bern Area MPO New Bern Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, participating in a Continuing, Comprehensive and Cooperative transportation planning process.

The New Bern Area MPO was established in 2013 as a result of the Federal Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1973. Any Urbanized Area (UZA) with a population greater than 50,000 is designated as an MPO. The Census Bureau establishes UZA boundaries. The NBAMPO strives to ensure an open transportation planning process where the free exchange of ideas and information and the opportunity for inpu

Many of you may be unfamiliar with the timeline of how a transportation project comes to life. It often takes a long time to see the idea become a finished project, usually years. If you want to see the transportation network in the New Bern Area improved, the MPO is a great place to start. We work directly with NCDOT and local governments to develop project plans that compete for funding to be constructed. Sharing your thoughts during the planning phase, rather than after funding is allocated and project development is underway, is the best way to ensure your concerns are heard.

We are coming up on the local input period of the prioritization process this summer. The local input period is your opportunity to influence the scoring of projects by ranking them based on level of support. The higher a project ranks, the more likely it is to be funded. The survey for local input will be released at a later date. Projects submitted for our area can be found on the MPO website under the "P8" page.

Sharing the road with cyclist can be confusing since it may not be something we come across everyday. Cyclists can seem unpredictable and it is nerveracking trying to pass them at times. If the cyclist is following the rules as they should be, theres no need to worry, just slow down, give them space, and pass safely. If you are the cyclist, use hand signals, follow all traffic laws as if you were driving and be aware of your surroundings.
