Call your state senators!

North Carolina’s coast is at a turning point and we need your voice. 🗣️

The call for action concerning along the is growing daily as we experience an average erosion rate of two feet, and around hot spots, 10 plus feet of coastal erosion.

In response, North Carolina lawmakers have introduced two bills, Senate Bill 1008, Pilot for Shoreline Stabilization Projects, and Senate Bill 1009, Repeal Hardened Structures Ban, which would significantly weaken long-standing protections for North Carolina’s public beaches and increase demand for state funds for hardened structures and beach renourishment.

These bills are a complete turnaround from a ban on hardened structures along the oceanfront that has been in place for over 40 years now, as scientific studies show they redirect or worsen erosion, not stop it. These structures interrupt the natural movement of sand, protecting one property while increasing erosion for neighboring homes and communities.

These projects also come with a high price tag. They cost millions to build and maintain, and often rely on public funding, shifting the cost of protecting private oceanfront properties onto taxpayers.

These bills represent a significant departure from that understanding, with potentially irreversible consequences for the state’s beaches, communities, state budget, and coastal economy.

Contact your State Senator by the end of this weekend and urge them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 1008 and Senate Bill 1009.

Ask them to:
Protect North Carolina’s long-standing ban on hardened shoreline structures
Oppose shifting financial risk from private development onto taxpayers
Wait for the Coastal Resources Commission’s study report before making major policy changes

Email or call your North Carolina Senator today and urge them to oppose Senate Bill 1008 and Senate Bill 1009. It only takes a minute to make your voice heard!

Visit North Carolina General Assembly at ncleg.gov/FindYourLegislators, enter your home address, and you’ll be provided with contact information for your State Senator. A quick email or call can make a real difference in protecting our coast.
