Happy PA Native Species Day! 🌸

To celebrate, we are featuring mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), the Pennsylvania state flower! This beautiful shrub blooms in the late spring and has a unique pollination method. 🐝

Each flower has ten white, thread-like filaments that curl back from the center of the bloom towards the edge into pockets (where the dark pink spots are). When a pollinator lands on the flower, these filaments are triggered to release from their pockets and spring forward, flinging a clump of pollen with them. This pollen lands on the insect and will be carried off to the next flower with them!

Soon, mountain laurel will bloom along the woodlands throughout Perry County! Keep an eye out for this amazing native shurb!

This month, our Watershed Specialist visited Paradise Stream Campground for their Community Support Weekend! 🌿

We had 18 kids come out to our Stream Exploration Workshop where they learned about the importance of clean water in our streams and the creatures that live in it. Everyone took turns using nets to catch macroinvertebrates, and then we studied the diversity of these animals! We even found a young common watersnake (Nerodia sipedon) swimming down the creek!

It was a beautiful afternoon with lots of exploring and learning! 🐍🐟

Spring is here and projects are underway! 🌳

Featured here is a silvopasture project that was recently installed on a Perry County farm. See those 10-foot tall willow live stakes? They will establish faster than seedlings and grow above deer browsing heights!

This project is funded by the Countywide Action Plan (CAP) Implementation Block Grant. This grant program aims to support project implementation to maximize nutrient and sediment reduction goals in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
