Exciting Progress for Downtown New Boston!

The Huron Charter Township Board of Trustees met Wednesday and took an important step forward by voting on the final placement of the new pavilion pictured below. Located on the open township property on the corner of Craig Street and Huron River Drive and the riverside property as well.

Grant funding for the pavilion had already been awarded to the Township through Wayne County. With the County’s deadline quickly approaching, the Township needed to move this portion of the project forward and provide the required documentation and receipts to ensure we met the grant requirements and could fully utilize the funding already awarded to our community.

The final pavilion will be a beautiful, functional, and truly multipurpose community structure designed to support gatherings, events, recreation, and activities for years to come.

What happens next?
The next step is soil boring and site testing. Once those results are received, we anticipate construction and installation of the pavilion beginning in early fall. Permanent fencing along the riverfront will also be moving forward.

The pavilion is an important first step in the larger vision for this space. As additional grant opportunities, funding sources, and project costs become clearer, other improvements can continue to move forward. Future amenities being considered include public restrooms, parking, a water feature, landscaping, additional seating, and other features designed to make the area welcoming and functional.

The overall plan will continue to evolve as funding becomes available and each phase of the project progresses.

We sincerely appreciate the feedback, ideas, and patience residents have shared throughout this process. Our goal is to create a beautiful, flexible, and welcoming community gathering space that serves many different purposes and that everyone in Huron Township can enjoy and benefit from for years to come.

We’re excited to see this vision begin to take shape!

The Parks & Rec team not only plans fun events for the community, we also dig in and get work done. Sunday morning we began working to update and revitalize Waltz Park. With the help of some resident volunteers, we were able to make a huge dent!

The main concession stand housed a massive “cooler” in the center which was once used to hold beer kegs for events. From the dates we found, this was installed 44 years ago but is no longer needed. We opened up the full space for use.

The large pavilion was cleaned up and the picnic tables were sorted. Approximately half need the boards replaced and the other half are in great shape. We opened up and assessed the other buildings on the property to make a plan for the next time we get together to clean and work.

SEEKING help from the community for assistance for the following:

1. Roofing - two of the medium buildings and two of the small buildings need new roofs. Experts sought to volunteer their time to direct or lead others to make the repairs.

2. Concrete or Cement Experts - seeking to overlay the floor of the concession stand. There are some uneven, cracked, and holes to fill.

3. Painting & Power washing - we plan to paint all the buildings and stain the concession stand in the coming months. Before doing so, we will need the power wash and clean inside and out.

These are the leading areas we are aiming to work on this year before the winter. If you or anyone you know are interested in helping or donating please reach out to:
