In an effort to be both transparent and informative, each month we publish a "Public Safety Community Report." This is also sometimes referred to as a "crime blotter." This report is only a small snapshot of calls for service responded to by our public safety personnel. It is not a comprehensive list of all calls for service. The Huron Township Department of Public Safety responded to a total of 2,557 calls for service during the month of August. Of these calls, 2,428 were classified as police runs, 129 were classified as EMS runs. The police department completed a total of 152 crime reports and 20 accident reports. The fire department had an average response time of 8 minutes and police EMT had an average response time of 10 minutes.
• August 2nd: Officers responded to the 21000 block of Huron River Drive for a reported single-vehicle accident. The caller reported that a vehicle had entered the ditch and that the driver did not appear to be injured. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the driver, a 43-year-old Detroit resident, who reported that he was not injured. The investigation determined that the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a guardrail. During the investigation, officers observed signs of intoxication. The driver was subsequently arrested for operating while intoxicated.
• August 6th: Officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Middlebelt and Pinegrove when they observed a vehicle traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. Officers, who were traveling approximately 70 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, were initially unable to catch up to the vehicle. The vehicle eventually pulled over, and officers made contact with the driver, a 32-year-old Newport resident. A check of the driver’s license revealed that it had been revoked. The driver was placed under arrest, and officers subsequently located suspected Adderall in his possession. The driver was unable to provide a valid prescription for the medication. The driver was arrested for driving while license suspended and possession of analogues.
• August 6th: Officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of southbound I-275 and Willow Road when they observed a vehicle traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. Radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 82 mph in a posted 65 mph zone. Officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, a 45-year-old Toledo resident. During the stop, the driver advised officers that there was a fi***rm inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s Concealed Pistol License (CPL) had expired. The driver was subsequently arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.
• August 10th: Officers responded to the 17000 block of Huron River Drive for a reported assault and battery. The caller reported that she had been punched in the face several times by another female customer, who then left the scene. The Huron Township Department of Public Safety responded and provided medical treatment to the caller, who had visible injuries but declined transportation to the hospital. The caller reported that she had been standing in line and was asking about her bill when another female customer, who was standing behind her, began making comments about her holding up the line. The two women exchanged words while leaving the business. The caller stated that she then made an offensive hand gesture toward the other woman, who subsequently punched her in the face several times before leaving the area in a vehicle. Employees and other customers at the business were unable to identify the suspect. The incident remains under investigation.
• August 17th: Officers were in the area of southbound I-275 near S. Huron Road conducting traffic enforcement when they observed a vehicle traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. Radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 86 mph in a posted 70 mph zone. Officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, a 43-year-old Bowling Green resident. During the stop, the driver advised officers that her driver’s license was currently suspended. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of suspected crack co***ne, glass pipes, and Chore Boy. The driver was subsequently arrested for possession of crack co***ne, driving while license suspended, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• August 19th: Officers responded to the 38000 block of Elk Run for a suspicious incident. The caller originally advised that there was a male at the location playing loud music and yelling “go ahead and call the police”. The caller then heard multiple “bangs”. Officers responded to the scene, and the male (a 42-year-old Huron Township resident) advised officers that they were not welcome on his property and ordered them to leave. Officers made contact with a victim (a 47-year-old Huron Township resident) who stated the male was her boyfriend, and he aimed a sh***un at her. The victim stated that her boyfriend was intoxicated, and he began yelling at her. The male then told her he was going to shoot her, and he walked inside the residence. The victim then began recording the incident. The male exited the home holding a sh***un. The male pointed it at her telling her he was going to shoot her and pulled the trigger. The sh***un did not have a round in the chamber. The male was arrested for felonious assault.
• August 27th: Officers were on patrol in the area of Will Carleton and Romine when they observed a vehicle pass an officer while traveling in the oncoming lane of traffic. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop and fled from officers. The vehicle traveled approximately 16 miles through the township during the pursuit, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph. During the pursuit, the vehicle was observed swerving and repeatedly turning its headlights off. The vehicle eventually stopped in the Kroger parking lot, where officers were able to safely take the driver, a 64-year-old Brownstown resident, into custody. A check of the driver’s license revealed that it was suspended. He was arrested for fleeing and eluding and driving while license suspended.
Fire Investigations:
• August 21st: The Huron Township Department of Public Safety responded to the 37000 block of Evans for a possible house fire. The caller advised that they were sleeping and woke up to a bright orange light coming from outside of her window. She got out of bed and noticed that her neighbors house was on fire. The Huron Township Department of Public Safety responded and observed the residence fully engulfed. Everyone was out of the residence when first responders arrived, the fire was extinguished. No one was injured, but there were two snakes and a bearded dragon that perished in the fire.
