On May 19, 2026, Officer Secor, our Fi****ms Instructor, led Officers E. Delisle, D. Delisle, and Sgt. Day through rifle and shotgun qualifications. Despite the hot and humid conditions, all officers successfully qualified. Officer Wynkoop and K9 Eclipse also joined the training day, conducting a practice track around our cruisers to locate spent ammunition. Just another great day on the job.

The New Boston Police Department is proud to announce our participation and raise awareness with New Hampshire's Blue Envelope Program - a voluntary initiative designed to promote safer and more effective communication during traffic stops for drivers who may have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or trauma or stress-related disorders.

The Blue Envelope Program is a simple resource that helps drivers keep important documents together while also providing the option to share communication preferences, sensory considerations, emergency contact information and/or other helpful notes. This information can assist state and local law enforcement officers in better understanding an individual's needs and supporting clear and respectful communication during traffic stops.

Participation in the program is completely voluntary and the envelope does not display or identify any specific medical diagnosis to help ensure your privacy.

Blue Envelopes are currently available through New Hampshire DMV locations for eligible individuals. For more information about the program or eligibility requirements, please contact your local DMV.

During National Police Week, we pause to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and service of the many men and women who protect our communities every day.

We honor the officers who continue to serve with integrity and compassion and we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their dedication to public safety - often carried out under immense pressures and unseen challenges - deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

This week is also a stark reminder of the importance of supporting the well-being of law enforcement officers and their families, while continuing to strengthen trust, understanding, and partnership within the communities they serve.

To all who wear the badge, and to the families who stand beside them: thank you for your service, resilience, and commitment.

The loss of a brother and hero transcends state lines and jurisdictions. We mourn the loss of Trooper Trainor and send our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Massachusetts State Police.

Rest easy Trooper Trainor. Your dedication, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The Massachusetts State Police announce the line-of-duty death of Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, who was senselessly killed this morning by a wrong-way driver.

At the conclusion of his public safety detail shortly before 2 a.m., Trooper Trainor began his commute home. Minutes later, 911 received a call reporting a wrong-way driver traveling South on Route 1 North in Lynnfield. Several dedicated Troopers converged on the area and located the vehicle traveling the wrong way at 2:03 a.m. One minute later, at 2:04 a.m., the vehicle collided with Trooper Trainor’s cruiser.

While nothing will ever repair the pain we feel today, we make a solemn promise to never forget Trooper Trainor and his service to the Commonwealth. Kevin served as a Corrections Officer in Essex County before joining the State Police as a member of the 88th Recruit Training Troop. In his decorated career, he mentored new Troopers as a Field Training Officer or “Trooper Coach,” earned a place on the prestigious Troop Community Action Team, set the standard for professionalism, and patrolled our roads with a singular focus: keeping the people of this Commonwealth safe.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Trooper Trainor’s classmates have shared stories of his genuine care and concern for others. As one person put it, “he was the guy you wanted as your backup.”

Colonel Noble said in his remarks this afternoon, “Make no mistake: Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning. His courage – his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and put his life on the line – prevented an even greater tragedy. He will be remembered as a hero.”

We deeply appreciate the outpouring of support from our Governor, the Secretary of Public Safety, and friends in Massachusetts and across the country. We will remember and honor this extraordinary man, son, fiancée, and friend who gave his life for others.

Recognition of Effort Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

In December 2024, the New Boston Police Department received a complaint concerning online communications between a juvenile and an unknown individual. The communications were alarming in nature, as the subject encouraged self harm and requested images from the juvenile. The investigation revealed that the interaction occurred on an online platform known as Discord, a popular communication application that allows text, voice, and video chat. Due to its use of private and invitation only servers, Discord can be challenging to monitor.

Sergeant Matthew Sullivan of the New Boston Police Department led this investigation and worked collaboratively with the New Hampshire Child Advocacy Center and Detectives from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force to expand the scope of the case. Through this collaboration, Sgt. Sullivan identified multiple usernames and email addresses associated with the concerning communications. He drafted numerous search warrants and dedicated countless hours reviewing communications and data obtained through those warrants.

Approximately two months into the investigation, Sergeant Sullivan identified specific devices and account identifiers connected to the Discord profiles, allowing him to significantly narrow the list of potential suspects. Ultimately, he was able to identify not only the individual responsible but also the specific device used to commit the offenses.

Although Sergeant Sullivan had sufficient evidence to pursue charges in the State of New Hampshire, he continued to proactively collaborate with a Detective from the North Canton, Ohio Police Department to determine whether additional victims existed and whether charges could be pursued in that jurisdiction. Recognizing that extradition to New Hampshire was unlikely, Sgt. Sullivan remained committed to assisting North Canton Police by sharing investigative findings and intelligence.

As a result of this interagency cooperation, North Canton Detectives were able to charge:
Travis Bertram, age 42, of North Canton, Ohio
Felony of the 3rd degree: Attempted Illegal Use of a Minor in Lewd Material

Punishable by up to 6–12 months in the House of Corrections
In October 2025, Mr. Bertram pled guilty to the aforementioned charge and was sentenced to the maximum allowable penalty of 12 months in the House of Corrections. Upon any potential release, he is prohibited from having contact with juveniles and from accessing the internet.

Despite the fact that no charges were ultimately filed within the State of New Hampshire, Sergeant Sullivan remained diligent and unwavering in his efforts to ensure that this individual was held accountable. His persistence directly contributed to another agency’s ability to bring the offender to justice.

As Chief of Police, I am beyond proud of Sergeant Sullivan’s commitment, professionalism, and dedication to this investigation and to the victims impacted by these crimes. This case exemplifies the exceptional work performed daily by the officers of the New Boston Police Department—work that often occurs behind the scenes and goes unnoticed.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to all partner agencies involved for their collaboration and support throughout this lengthy and complex investigation.

- Chief Stephen Case
