For 25 years, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives.

The truth is, we shouldn’t still need this day. But we do.

Overdose continues to affect every community. Yet it can be prevented. We know how to reduce risk and keep people safe. By speaking openly, learning from one another, and treating each other with care and respect, we build a world where fewer lives are lost.

Because while this day is still needed, it doesn’t have to be forever.

Hill Country MHDD Centers' Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) lead, Ariel, recently reached out to Drug-Free Comal to inquire about obtaining Deterra drug deactivation and disposal pouches.

The team had realized the pouches proved very useful in providing a safe means of disposal to the community they serve. Drug-Free Comal was happy to fill their immediate need and to provide resources for exploring sustainable solutions.

National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day comes with the reminder that it's never too early to have age-appropriate conversations about medication safety, substance use, mental health, peer pressure, counterfeit pills, and how to ask for help.

For younger children, prevention starts with simple messages:
▫️ Only take medicine from a trusted adult
▫️ Never take a pill that was not given to you by a parent, caregiver, or healthcare provider
▫️ Ask for help if something feels unsafe

For teens and young adults, prevention means talking directly about counterfeit pills, illegally made fentanyl, naloxone, mental health, and what to do if a friend may be in danger.

Just 2mg of fentanyl, smaller than a grain of salt, can be enough to kill.

Drug Free Comal has the absolute privilege to welcome and connect with various organizations and individuals. Unifying our services with community members and allying with local groups to ensure a complete spectrum of care is reached for every individual in Comal County is the foundation of our organization. Along with this care, creating a safe and healthy environment is key to living a fulfilling life.

This month we're highlighting July's Disability Pride Awareness and International Mental Health Month! What better organization to spotlight than Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers (HCMHDD)?

Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers offer multi-dimensional care and services. From case management and outreach to crisis intervention and behavioral health supports; HCMHDD does it all. This organization helps people gain positive control over the life they desire, find it satisfying, and be recognized and valued for their contributions to their communities.

In the community, HCMHDD shows up when needed. With the recent floodings in the Hill Country, this organization has held the hand of the counties served and continue to offer wraparound services as the aftermath of these traumatic events are surfacing. If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health challenges, reach out to your nearest Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Center for assistance.

Jesamy Ferguson, a Qualified Mental Health Professional as well as HCMHDD’s Clinic Director, gave us an amazing insight on the organization’s innerworkings and her first-hand perspective.
