Crisis Center of Comal County Our mission is to embrace survivors of abuse and trauma and empower them to positively change the trajectory of their lives.

The Crisis Center of Comal County was founded in 1986 as the Comal County Women's Center. Numerous local citizens began a grassroots effort to develop an agency that would address the needs of those experiencing domestic violence. In the beginning, the agency consisted of several volunteers who provided information and referral to other service providers in the area. As time passed and grant fundi

ng was obtained, the agency grew to include several paid staff and an emergency shelter. During those first years many of the agency’s clients also required sexual assault services. As a result, the center developed a sexual assault crisis services program to serve Comal County. A capital campaign fund completed in 1994 funded a six-bedroom full service emergency shelter. Since that time the staff has grown and includes shelter staff, licensed counselors, legal advocates, and crisis response staff members. In 2000 the shelter was expanded to 9 bedrooms and built new office space to provide additional services. As the number of clients increased the agency began to provide more services to men. As a result the agency name was changed to The Crisis Center of Comal County. In 2020, the agency served more than 1,526 victims, and expanded the shelter space to now accommodate 80 clients. The Administration team, counseling, legal and prevention services relocated to across the street at 1528 Common.

A little throwback to 2009. 💜

Even then, the Crisis Center of Comal County was growing to meet the needs of our community.

This photo captures one of the many seasons of expansion in our 40-year history—a reminder that this organization has never stood still for very long.

As Comal County has grown, so have the needs of survivors and families. Over the years, that has meant expanding programs, increasing services, creating more space and finding new ways to respond when our community needs us most.

Today, we are in another season of growth.

With our new shelter now open, expanded capacity and more opportunities to serve women, men and children impacted by abuse and trauma, we’re building on everything that came before us.

Different year. Different season.

Same mission. 💜

We are excited to officially announce Janis Parsley as the Chief Executive Officer of the Crisis Center of Comal County. 💜

For many in our community, Janis may be a familiar face.

Before stepping into the role of Interim CEO this summer, Janis served on the Crisis Center’s Board of Directors and played an instrumental role in our Capital Campaign, helping lead the effort to make our new shelter a reality.

Her path to the Crisis Center is a unique one. Janis began her career as a pharmacist after graduating from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and went on to build a career in fundraising and advancement, eventually serving in development leadership at the University of Houston.

She brings that experience in relationship-building, philanthropy, leadership and strategy to a mission that has become deeply important to her.

Janis stepped into leadership during an especially significant season for the Crisis Center. This summer, we celebrated our 40th anniversary, opened our new 30,000-square-foot shelter and began welcoming survivors and families into a space designed to dramatically expand our ability to serve.

At the grand opening in June, Janis called the moment “not only a new building, but a new chapter.”

Now, we are excited to officially begin that new chapter with her as our CEO.

Throwing it back to 1997. 💜

At the time, the Crisis Center of Comal County was still very much a grassroots organization—but our team was already showing up, speaking out and standing alongside others across Texas to say that violence in our communities had to end.

This photo was taken as members of CCCC participated in a March to End Violence.

Long before we had a 30,000-square-foot shelter, expanded programs or the capacity we have today, we had people willing to use their voices.

That grassroots spirit is still part of who we are.

For 40 years, this organization has grown because people in our community believed survivors deserved safety, support and a future free from violence—and they were willing to do something about it.

A lot has changed since 1997.

The commitment hasn’t. 💜

Sometimes, compassion looks like simply saying, “I’ll go.” 💜

During the flooding in July, we were concerned that some of our shelter staff might not be able to safely make it in to work.

Before we even had to figure out what came next, a team member whose job has nothing to do with shelter operations volunteered to step in and stay with our clients if needed.

That moment says so much about the people who make up the Crisis Center of Comal County.

Our titles may be different. Our day-to-day jobs may look very different. But when our clients need us, we show up for one another—and for them.

That’s Compassion in Action.
