This weekend I’m block walking across House District 73.

I hear the same things over and over: property tax bills that keep climbing, protecting our water, keeping explicit content away from kids, and making sure elections are secure.

The Texas State Board of Education voted 8-4 on Friday to keep new high school social studies standards that cover early Islam without the usual soft-focus.

Students will be taught that Muhammad took female captives as harem slaves, ran brutal campaigns against Jewish and Christian tribes, and that slavery was normal in early Islam.

The board also changed the wording from “the Prophet Mohammed” to “Prophet of Islam.” Member Brandon Hall said not everyone accepts him as a prophet, and he cited Muhammad’s marriage to a six-year-old girl, consummated at nine.

The package also puts more weight on Christianity in American history. The new standards take effect in 2030 across U.S. History, World History, World Geography, and U.S. Government.

Dozens of Muslim speakers objected. Texas already designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist and transnational criminal organizations in 2025.
