Step into the moonlight with us at Roaring Brook Nature Center! Learn the history behind the Hunters' Moon and experience a night hike through the trails.

Join us Monday for a guided hike under the full moon known by early Native American tribes as the Hunters’ Moon. Its bright appearance and its early evening rise provided more light for several nights in a row allowing hunters to hunt game more easily in the fall in preparation for the winter months ahead. Dress for the weather & bring a flashlight.

Animal Assistance Report: From 10/19 to 10/26 our team worked with several wildlife cases. Some animals were successfully:
• Released back to their natural habitat
• Reunited with their families
• Transferred to specialized wildlife rehabilitation centers

Unfortunately, a few animals did not survive. However, we ensured that those animals experienced a compassionate transition - they were protected, cared for, and kept comfortable in their final moments. In some critical cases, we made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize an animal to prevent further suffering.

Myth: If a reptile is found near your home, it must be dangerous.
Fact: Five-lined Skinks are harmless reptiles that help control insects and are a unique part of Connecticut’s wildlife.
🍁 Did You Know?
The Five-lined Skink is Connecticut’s only native lizard species.
Young skinks have bright blue tails that help distract predators — if a predator grabs the tail, the skink can escape!
🏡 Humane Coexistence Tip
Leave rocks, logs, and natural areas in your yard when possible. These provide important shelter for reptiles and many other small animals.
