🍂 Day 1: Eastern Gray Squirrel
🐿️ Winter Is Coming! Nature's Master Food Collector
Think you're prepared for winter? The Eastern Gray Squirrel has probably already hidden hundreds of meals by now! 🌰🍂

While we're just beginning to notice cooler mornings, Connecticut's Eastern Gray Squirrels have been hard at work preparing for the long winter ahead.

🐿️ How do squirrels prepare for winter?
Instead of sleeping all winter, squirrels stay active. During September and October they begin collecting:

🌰 Acorns
🌰 Hickory nuts
🌰 Beechnuts
🌰 Walnuts
🌰 Seeds

They bury these treasures in hundreds of different locations called caches.

Here's the amazing part...

A single squirrel may bury thousands of nuts each fall! Although they don't remember every hiding place, their incredible sense of smell helps them recover many beneath the snow.

The forgotten nuts often grow into new trees—making squirrels some of Connecticut's best forest planters.

🍂 Did You Know?
🐿️ Squirrels grow a thicker winter coat.

🐿️ Their bushy tail acts like a blanket on cold nights.

🐿️ They build leafy nests called dreys high in trees and may also use hollow trees for extra warmth.

🐿️ They often gather food during warmer winter days.

🏡 Humane Coexistence Tip
If you have oak, beech, or hickory trees, consider leaving a few fallen nuts where they are. They're an important natural food source for squirrels, chipmunks, deer, wild turkeys, and many other Connecticut wildlife species.

Avoid disturbing tree cavities or nests during the fall—wildlife may already be using them as winter shelter.

Due to your donations...we were able to help a rehabber with a bag of dog food, hammocks, and baby toys ( for raccoons)! When donating to places, check out how much their CEO makes. Donate to places that are are run by volunteers only and donate to them! They are struggling! We are always at zero balance because every dollar goes to run the Center and assisting many rehabbers!

🍂 SEPTEMBER SERIES: Winter Is Coming! How Connecticut Wildlife Gets Ready for Winter ❄️🐾

The leaves are starting to change... but Connecticut's wildlife has been preparing for winter for weeks!

While many of us are enjoying pumpkin spice, crisp mornings, and colorful foliage, our wild neighbors are busy with one goal—survival.

Throughout September, join us as we discover the amazing ways Connecticut wildlife prepares for the cold months ahead.

Did you know...

🐿️ Squirrels bury thousands of acorns, but they don't remember where they hide them all—helping plant future forests!

🐻 Black bears spend autumn eating almost nonstop to build the fat they'll need during winter.

🦫 Beavers create underwater food pantries filled with fresh branches before ponds freeze.

🦨 Skunks search for safe winter dens, sometimes sharing them with other skunks for warmth.

🦇 Bats begin preparing for hibernation, while many birds take to the skies on incredible migrations that span thousands of miles.

Thanks to your donations we are able to do this! Hardware cloth that was left over, is given away....nothing wasted! Your children's old outside toys will be enjoyed in a raccoon enclosure by many raccoons for years!

Donations folks don't think about....sewing materials (fabric and fleece), pet cages (ferrets, chinchilla, cats, etc), pet toys (feeding puzzles, cat towers, etc, cat wheels), meds from your pet that passed, baby crib/stroller toys, bottle warmers or formula warmers, etc. Think outside of the box!

We appreciate your donations of time too! Transporting, sewing, volunteering, etc!
