New Britain community invited to Labor Day BBQ this Saturday
NEW BRITAIN – There will be a Labor Day BBQ for the community in the Howie House parking lot Saturday.
The Friendship Service Center along with the North Oak NRZ, New Life II, Greater New Britain Re-Entry, Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin and Teeza Barbershop will be hosting the event from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
“We got together and felt with everything going on with the pandemic and the racial inequality issues we just wanted to do something to show people that we’re unified and people still care,” said Dana Smith, pastor of New Life II Church and president of North Oak NRZ.
The organizations wanted to do something for the people that might not have something to do for the Labor Day weekend as well as lift up the community.
“We want people to come together safely to the North Street community and see that it’s a nice area and it’s not as bad as people think. We’ve been working really hard to build this community,” said Anna Tramell, social worker and case manager at Howie House. “We have really hardworking people from all socioeconomics and different cultures and we want to strengthen the area.”
All are welcomed to stop by the community event and grab some hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, waters, potato chips and cookies.
“I wish we could do more, but with everything going on we have to be careful,” Smith said. “We wanted to do things like potato salad, but everything has to be packaged.”
Masks are required to attend the event and will be provided to those who do not have one. Social distancing is encouraged.
“Hopefully we can continue to come together and pull our resources for the city and the community; that’s the only way we’re going to come out of this together, if we all come together. People need to see unity during this time,” Smith said.
