Today, thousands of officers from across the nation came together to honor and pay tribute to the life and service of Newark Police’s own Sergeant Joseph Azcona.

The Rutgers University Police Department was deeply honored to stand alongside fellow law enforcement officers, his family, friends, and the Newark community in remembrance of a true hero. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, Joseph Azcona was posthumously promoted from Detective to Sergeant at today’s services—a testament to his impact and devotion to duty.

May Sergeant Azcona’s legacy live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and may we continue to honor his memory through our service and dedication to the communities we protect.

Rest in peace, Sergeant Azcona. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
