This Fire Prevention Week, our team at Rutgers University Emergency Services (RUES) had a fantastic time visiting the students and staff at the Rutgers Therapeutic Day School!

We performed a special Fire Safety Demonstration to help the students learn essential tips for staying safe. Our demo covered:

"Stop, Drop, and Roll" techniques.

The importance of having and practicing a home escape plan.

The life-saving role of smoke detectors and how they work.

What to do if there's a fire.

It was a wonderful opportunity to engage with the students and make fire safety education both fun and informative! We're proud to support our community and help everyone be better prepared.

Remember: Fire safety is a year-round commitment! Take a few moments today to talk about your family's escape plan.

At 1742 hrs on June 12th, members of Emergency Services and Rutgers Police were dispatched to 671 Hoes Lane West for an activated fire alarm. Upon our Lieutenants arrival, he proceeded to the room in alarm and observed a slight smoke condition. Piscataway Fire District 2 was updated on the conditions. As the smoke continued to increase in intensity, Rutgers Rescue 1 and an Emergency Services ambulance were added to the assignment.

A unified command post was established and the incident was raised to a second alarm by Piscataway Fire. Upon the arrival of Rutgers High Voltage Electricians, the power was secured and the smoke condition ceased. The source of the smoke was determined to be a failed transformer in the buildings main electrical room. Crews remained on scene to perform smoke ventilation of multiple floors.

In addition to Rutgers Emergency Services and Rutgers Police, we extend our thanks to the following departments that responded to assist in mitigating this incident:
