Heads up, beachgoers: This week’s cooler temperatures and stronger winds increase the risk of rip currents along Lake Michigan.

Rip currents (AKA “undertow”) can be difficult to spot. One of the biggest warning signs is an area of calm-looking water surrounded by breaking waves. If the whole beach is wavy except for one smooth, darker channel, that’s often a rip current, not a safe place to swim.

Know the signs:
• A calm, darker gap between breaking waves
• Water carrying foam, sand, or debris away from shore
• Choppy water next to an unusually smooth patch

If you’re caught in a rip current:
• Stay calm, don’t fight the current.
• Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the current, then head back to shore.
• If you can’t escape, float, tread water, and wave for help.

And remember: Stay away from the break wall. Rip currents frequently form along this area of the beach.

Dredging of New Buffalo Harbor started July 9th and is expected to go on for five days. Maintain caution around dredge equipment. Be aware of reduced navigable area in the channel, be kind and courteous to fellow boaters and give the dredge crew a wave, it’s hot out there!
