As we get closer to the 4th of July, it’s a great time to start thinking about how to celebrate safely while still keeping the fun and excitement of the holiday alive. 🇺🇸✨

Fireworks are a long-standing tradition for holidays and celebrations, but they also present significant safety risks, including burns, fires, injuries, and property damage. In recent years, many communities and families have begun exploring safer alternatives that provide the same sense of excitement and celebration without the dangers associated with open flames and explosives.

Options such as drone light shows, laser displays, LED glow products, and other non-pyrotechnic activities can create memorable experiences while helping protect people, pets, property, and the environment. By choosing safer alternatives, celebrations can remain festive, enjoyable, and responsible for everyone involved.

CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY REMINDER

In recent weeks, there have been multiple Carbon Monoxide (CO) incidents in New Canaan. The New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office is sharing this important safety information to help protect you, your family, and your friends.

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced by incomplete combustion. Without a working CO detector, you may not know you are being exposed until symptoms begin.

Symptoms of CO exposure include:
• Headache
• Nausea
• Dizziness / Lightheadedness
• Fatigue

High levels of exposure can lead to unconsciousness or even death.

✅ How to Protect Yourself:
• Install working CO detectors on every level of your home
• Follow manufacturer instructions - larger homes may require multiple detectors per floor
• Test detectors regularly and replace batteries when changing clocks in spring and fall
• Have furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and gas dryers serviced annually
• Never operate gasoline-powered equipment such as generators or power washers inside or within 20 feet of your home

MOST IMPORTANT:
If your CO detector activates:
• Evacuate immediately
• Call 911
• Do NOT ignore the alarm or attempt to investigate yourself

Remember: Carbon Monoxide cannot be seen or smelled. The New Canaan Fire Department has specialized equipment to monitor and mitigate CO hazards safely.
Please share this information to help keep our community safe.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives

NEW CANAAN, CT (March 2026): A New Canaan family is safe today thanks to working
smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.
It is important to have enough smoke alarms for your home. Fire research has demonstrated that with today’s modern furnishings, fires can spread much more rapidly than in the past when natural materials were used.

Follow these simple instructions when installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors:

• Choose smoke/carbon monoxide alarms that have the label of a recognized testing
laboratory, such as UL.

• Install smoke alarms inside each sleeping room and outside of each sleeping area
(typically in the bedroom hallway) and on every level of the home, including the
basement.

• Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed outside of each sleeping area (again, the bedroom hallway) and on every level of the home, including the basement. Combination smoke/carbon monoxide detectors are available for these locations.

• In addition to smoke detectors, the Fire Marshal’s Office recommends the use of heat
detectors in areas where naturally occurring smoke or fumes would cause an alarm with
a regular smoke detector. Places like kitchens and garages will benefit from heat
detectors.

The Fire Marshal’s Office offers complimentary Home Safety Inspections to all New Canaan residents. Please get in touch with the office to schedule an appointment by email to [email protected] or by calling 203-594-3030
