It is time for another DVI participant spotlight! Today we are showcasing the amazing, Gary Pizzola!
Born in the Bronx during a blizzard, Gary Pizzola’s life changed when he lost his vision at just 14 years old due to a severe eye infection called uveitis. His doctors did not know how to help him and the treatments left him physically weakened, and for a period of time, unable to walk. As a teenager, Gary struggled with feeling different and uncertain about his future, but he refused to let those challenges define him.
Through determination and hard work, Gary rebuilt his strength and independence. In the mid-1980s, he connected with the Blind Entrepreneurs Program (BEP), where he discovered a new opportunity to build a career in food service and business operations. Starting at a small candy stand, Gary developed skills in customer service, management, and leadership while gaining confidence in his abilities. “The BEP gave me confidence,” Gary shared. “It showed me what I was capable of.”
After moving to Delaware with his wife, Kris, Gary continued growing through Delaware’s BEP program, operating cafés and cafeteria services throughout the state. Today, he oversees vending and food service operations across Delaware and remains deeply committed to supporting both customers and his team.
Gary’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, perseverance, and independence. “We’re entrepreneurs. We’re blind, but we work,” Gary said proudly. “I don’t consider myself disabled. It’s just me working, trying to make a living.”
