New Castle Conservation Commission

New Castle Conservation Commission The NCCC focuses on providing: guidance to residents; proactive stewardship; preservation of open space and ecosystems; and education and outreach.

New Castle is an island community with a total area of .87 square miles. As an island community, New Castle has incredible natural beauty and diverse natural resources that require ongoing restoration, preservation and protection. The island has a variety of scenic views and fragile ecosystems including; ocean, estuaries, rivers, coastal shoreline, salt marshes, wetlands, uplands, and woodlands. T

he areas are home to an array of native marine and upland plants, and provide habitat for birds, fish and animals. These natural features are an inherent part of the unique character and physical attractiveness of the Town and are one of its greatest assets. It is critical that New Castle make every effort to restore, preserve and protect them. The Town’s conservation efforts are conducted primarily through the New Castle Conservation Commission and Town ordinances. The New Castle Conservation Commission is a board of seven members and three alternates appointed by the Town Select Board. The Conservation Commission carries out the Town’s conservation goals by focusing its effort on; providing expertise, guidance and recommendations to Town boards and residents; proactive stewardship and natural resource management of Town land; preservation of open space through acquisitions and easements; restoration and preservation of native vegetation and ecosystems; and education and outreach.

I had an opportunity to fly the coast of New Hampshire yesterday. Incredible views and sights. Most of our shoreline is comprised of wetland complexes, overflow marshes, salt marshes, and tidal systems. When you look from above you can really appreciate what we have and how truly important it is to preserve and protect it.
