If you’re experiencing a power outage during cold weather, your safety comes first. Here are a few important tips to help you stay warm until power is restored:

Heat safely
• If you have a fireplace or wood stove, use it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure vents are clear.
• Never use grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors or in garages—they produce deadly carbon monoxide.
• If you’re using a space heater, keep it at least 3 feet away from anything flammable and never leave it unattended.

Keep body heat in
• Wear layers of warm, loose-fitting clothing.
• Use blankets, sleeping bags, or coats to trap heat.
• Gather everyone into one room and close off unused rooms to conserve warmth.

Reduce heat loss
• Close curtains and blinds to help keep cold air out.
• Stuff towels or clothing at the base of doors and windows to block drafts.

Fuel your body
• Eat regular meals and drink warm, non-alcoholic beverages if possible. Your body needs energy to stay warm.

Check on others
• Look in on neighbors, especially older adults, people with disabilities, and families with young children.
