A person in the community asked about a home with more than 5 cars parked all along the street which made it hard for the plows to get through. We came across this information and wanted to share.
Parking codes and requirements for developments in the City of New Castle, Delaware, including residential areas like Coventry, are regulated by the City Code (Chapter 230, Zoning) and, for broader county standards, the New Castle County Unified Development Code (UDC).
Residential Parking Requirements (City of New Castle)
• Single-Family Detached Dwellings: Generally requires two off-street parking spaces per unit.
• Attached Dwellings: Generally requires two off-street parking spaces per unit.
• Infill Units: For infill units in specific Historic Districts (HC and HR), added units may not require additional parking.
Key Parking Restrictions and Regulations
• Prohibited Vehicles: Parking boats, boat trailers, off-highway vehicles (OHVs), tractors, trailers, or trucks over 5,000 pounds (or exceeding 240 inches in length, 84 inches in width, or 84 inches in height) is generally prohibited in residential districts, except when serving a permitted use.
• Front Yard/Lawn Parking: Parking boats, trailers, or OHVs on front yard areas or lawns is prohibited.
• Commercial/Public Lots: The Board of Adjustment may grant special exceptions for uncovered, ground-level public or commercial parking lots in residential zones.
• Space Dimensions: If parking spots are not already lined, they must be at least 18 feet long.
• Fire Hydrant/Safety: Parking is prohibited within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk, or 30 feet of a stop sign or traffic light.
