𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗕. 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸’𝘀 𝟴𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆—𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 & 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲’𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.
At our shelter, staff are trained that when a child asks for something, to say: “Go ask your mom.”
This small, intentional act aims to restore a mother’s parental authority in situations where mothers have frequently been belittled in front of their children.
𝗣𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴—𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲. As she celebrates another year around the sun, fittingly on Denim Day, we’re reminded that this work endures because of people like her.
