*NEW E BIKE RULES NOW IN EFFECT IN NEW JERSEY*

New Jersey has enacted a new law regulating electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) to improve safety for riders, pedestrians, and motorists. This law applies to all motor-powered bicycles and scooters. If it has a motor and can move on its own, it is treated as a motorized bicycle under New Jersey law, so please take a minute to read and share.

What’s Changing Now
License required: E Bike Types (All Now Require License, Registration & Insurance)

• Low speed electric bikes: Pedal-assist, motor helps up to ~20 mph
• Motorized bikes: Throttle-controlled, up to ~28 mph
• Electric motorized bicycles: More powerful, can exceed 28 mph

Ages 17+: Valid NJ driver’s license needed
Ages 15–16: Motorized bicycle license/permit required
Under 15: Not allowed to operate low speed or motorized e bikes or e-scooters

Registration & insurance required: All e bikes and e scooters with a motor that can move on its own must be registered with NJ MVC and insured.

Sales & Modifications

Online e bike sales are banned statewide for one year
Modification kits that turn low speed e bikes into higher powered models are now illegal

Safety Reminder & Note to Parents

Helmet use is mandatory for ages 15-17 and strongly encouraged for all riders

We encourage parents and guardians to have open conversations with their children about safe riding habits and understanding the rules of the road. A few simple conversations and clear expectations can go a long way; knowing who can ride, where they can ride, and what equipment is required can help prevent injuries and tickets. If your child or teen rides an e bike or e scooter, now is a good time to review these rules together and make a plan to get any needed licenses, registration, and insurance within the grace period.

6-Month Grace Period
The State has announced a 6-month grace period for registration and insurance compliance. This does not apply to underage riding, unsafe operation, or local sidewalk/park rules.

A low-speed electric bicycle (e-bike) is a two-wheeled bicycle with pedals where the motor assists only while pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.

Our Academy staff is deeply saddened by the passing of our Chief Training Coordinator Ret. Lt. John Tate.

After beginning his career with the Seaside Heights Police Department and retiring as a Lieutenant in 2003, he joined the Academy staff and began training recruits in 2005.

For more than two decades, he mentored and shaped generations of police recruits who came through our Academy — not just teaching them how to do the job, but how to be in the job. He set the standard for professionalism, integrity, and leadership, all while making the toughest days a little lighter with his unmistakable humor.

He was smart in a way that made everyone around him sharper. Kind in a way that made everyone around him better. And generous with his time, wisdom, and encouragement in ways that will ripple through this profession for years to come.

The officers walking our streets today carry pieces of his guidance with them. His impact cannot be measured in years of service alone — it lives on in the countless lives he influenced.

We are better because he was here.
We are grateful for his leadership.
We will carry his legacy forward.

Rest easy. We’ve got it from here. 💙

We are sending our deepest condolences to the Tate family today. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
