The people of Ellenton learned in the early 1950's that their town would be displaced by a massive nuclear weapons complex. The United States Government bought 200,000 acres of land in Aiken and Barnwell Counties for $19 million and built facilities to generate nuclear components for the hydrogen bomb. It was common to see homes, churches or stores traveling down the road on the back of a truck. The Atomic City Festival began in 1972 in remembrance of the 6,000 people whose town was displaced in order to provide national security. Today the City of New Ellenton is stronger than ever and we look forward to serving you!

Update from Aiken County!

Aiken County EOC is currently at OPCON 3, and will move to OPCON 1 at 8:00 AM on Saturday, September 9, 2017. OPCON 1 means that a disaster or emergency situation is in effect, and full-fledged emergency response operations are on-going. This is the highest state of emergency operations.

The storm models have shifted slightly west, but we are still expecting to receive tropical storm force winds of 75-85 mph sometime between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning. It is possible for the storm to change direction and strength over the next two days, so remain alert to updates from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center. The wind field is 185 miles wide, so even if the storm continues to move west, we could have a significant impact.

Aiken County School District is awaiting an announcement from the governor’s office at 2:30 PM today. At that time, there will be a decision about school closings and shelter openings.

We will provide information about shelters for people and animals as soon as possible, sometime this afternoon.

The governor’s office will also confirm evacuation plans and interstate reversals later today.

We strongly encourage those who live in mobile homes or campers to seek shelter in structurally sound buildings by noon on Sunday.

We also strongly encourage you to sign up for Code Red to receive emergency alerts on your phone about evacuations and other disaster related information: https://public.coderedweb.com/cne/en-US/72087DD33802

Aiken County EMP update.

Aiken County Emergency Operations Center is currently at OPCON 4, but will move to OPCON 3 at 8:00 AM tomorrow, September 8, 2017. OPCON 3 means that a disaster is likely or imminent, and the EOC will be fully staffed.

Aiken County Government offices will be open tomorrow. Officials will determine on Sunday if offices will be open on Monday. Courts are closed on Monday.
Aiken County Public Schools have not determined when they will close.

Residents who live in mobile homes or campers are strongly encouraged to find shelter in structurally sound buildings by noon on Sunday. Aiken County may open up to four shelters, but they will not open until the governor orders mandatory evacuation. Space in shelters will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

For information or non-emergency calls, dial 2-1-1 or the Sheriff’s Office at 803-648-6811. For all fire, EMS, or law enforcement emergencies, dial 9-1-1.

We are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irma and fall under the County's Emergency Preparedness plans. Please keep an eye out on this storm. Be diligent in your plans for preparedness for you and your Pets. Team Stinkykiss is opening up a shelter at the Aiken County Fairgrounds. Stay tuned!
