Today Chickasaw County Emergency Management participated in a unique and valuable livestock rollover training at the Swine Medical Education Center on the campus of Iowa State University.

This hands-on training brought together emergency management, law enforcement, veterinary students, DOT personnel, and tow truck operators to strengthen coordination and response capabilities during livestock transportation incidents.

Participants worked through real-world scenarios involving overturned trailers, focusing on animal safety, responder safety, traffic control, and effective multi-agency communication. Trainings like this are critical in rural areas where livestock transport is common and incidents can quickly become complex.

We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate and continue building the skills needed to respond effectively.

Preparedness through partnership. Safety through planning.

Over the past few weeks, Chickasaw County Emergency Management has been working closely with the Chickasaw Event Center to develop a comprehensive evacuation plan including detailed maps to enhance safety for all visitors, staff, and event participants.

Planning and preparedness are key components of emergency management. By collaborating with local partners, we can ensure that everyone knows the safest routes and procedures in the event of an emergency. These efforts help strengthen our community’s readiness and resilience.

We appreciate the partnership and commitment of the Chickasaw Event Center team as we continue working together to keep our community safe.

Planning Team included Chickasaw Event Center Executive Director Janet Pickar, Chickasaw County Council on Aging President William Schwickerath, and Chickasaw County Emergency Management Jeff Bernatz.

🚨 Professional Growth at the Iowa APCO/NENA Spring Conference! 🚨

Over the past two days Chickasaw County EMA/911 attended the Iowa APCO/NENA Spring Conference in Des Moines. Joining 911 Directors and Telecommunicators from across the state for intensive training and collaboration to better serve our community.

Chickasaw County EMA/911 successfully completed 16 hours of continuing education, focusing on the latest trends, technologies, and life-saving strategies in emergency communications.

🗓️ Day 1: Iowa NENA – Culture & Leadership

Day 1 featured The Healthy Dispatcher Kris Inman, with a powerful session on "Center Culture and Communication: Leadership in Every Chair." This presentation focused on ensuring that every member of our team—from newest hire to veteran director—is empowered to lead during a crisis.

🗓️ Day 2: Iowa APCO – Passion & Performance

Day 2 we shifted gears with Doug Showalter of Showalter & Company for their session "Leave A Legacy Worth Leaving." We explored "When Every Second Counts: Reigniting Passion, Purpose, and Peak Performance in 9-1-1." It was an incredible reminder of the "why" behind what we do and how to maintain the highest standards of service in emergency communications.

Thank you to the Iowa APCO and Iowa NENA chapters for putting on a great conference.
