In alignment with Department of Defense (DoD) Instruction 5400.17 and recent Executive Orders issued by the President, the United States Marine Corps has reviewed and adjusted its social media content to ensure compliance with DoD policies and priorities. Although Native Americans have a long history of perseverance through decades of persecution and challenges, the community has remained steadfast in the defense of the United States as members of the Armed Forces.

From battlefields in the Revolutionary War to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, and most recently the Middle Eastern region, the Native Americans have served in every major military conflict for over 200 years.

With the Marines, Native American members played a pivotal role in World War II. The Navajo Code Talkers, a unit originally comprised of 29 Marines, are forever remembered in history for creating a special code using their indigenous language to transmit sensitive information to the front lines in real time as they received them. Ranging from the Navajo, Cherokee, Choctaw, Lakota, Meskwaki and Comanche tribes, they grew to 400 members in the military entirely. It was this code that helped the United States win the war in the Pacific in 1945.

Since Sept. 11th, almost 19% of all Native Americans have served in the Armed forces, in comparison to an average of 14% of any other ethnicity. Despite all of the obstacles, Native American service members have been a shining beacon of honor, courage, and commitment.
