Call for Papers: The Journal of History (University of Toronto Press) is seeking contributions from scholars who critically engage in the use of historical testimony in various artistic and educational initiatives. Submissions for this Special Issue: Historical Testimony and the Arts can come from a broad range of disciplines, examining how historical testimony can be used to both represent and understand the past.

All submissions must be in by December 4, 2026.

Tomorrow, the Istorima Archive and the Memory Makers project will bring together eleven researchers, archivists, educators, and storytellers to explore how WWII oral history is preserved, activated, and shared in the digital age.

Through case studies, live demonstrations, and open dialogue, this two-hour webinar traces the full arc, from large-scale oral history databases and Holocaust testimony to graphic novels, educational programs, and short-form media. Fortunoff Video Archive Fellow, Artist-in-Residence, and author Dr. Evlampia Tsireli will be speaking at this webinar.

Late next month, Zisl Slepovitch and Sasha Lurje will bring Songs From Testimonies to Europe, with shows in Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna.

Zisl created Songs From Testimonies as a musical research and performance project based on poems and songs in interviews with Holocaust survivors held here at the archive. Shotns/Shadows, Vol. 3 is now available on our website at songsfromtestimonies.org.

Earlier this month, the U-CORE project launched its Luxembourg collection of 80+ interviews with uprooted Ukrainian citizens. The Italian word “Zingaresca” means “in a Gypsy style." Formed in 2006, ZINGARESCA Music Ensemble is a collaboration between the celebrated Romani (“Gypsy”) virtuoso Vadim Kolpakov, the pioneer in the revival of the seven-string guitar Oleg Timofeyev, and the Juilliard-trained baritone Anton Belov. They interweave classical Eastern European guitar heritage with the best traditions of the Romani and Jewish diaspora, blending the sophistication of classical music with the fiery vitality of folk musical expression.

Register now for Yiddish Barcelona’s Intensive Yiddish Program from July 19-24.

Based at Casa Adret, in Barcelona’s historic Jewish quarter, this new program aims to explore Yiddish language and culture within Spanish- and Catalan-speaking contexts, while fostering dialogue between the Ashkenazi and Sephardic worlds. In April, joined the Yale Genocide Studies Program (Yale Genocide Studies Program) to co-host “What is Testimony For?” with participants from the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria. Scholars explored the ways witness testimony from genocides is being used in education and culture.
