Happy PRIDE month, New Haven! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

New Haven is PROUDLY a welcoming and inclusive city for all. This PRIDE month, we celebrate our LGBTQ+ residents AND we also celebrate ‘s 30 years of service to the Elm City community! 🎉

An added point of PRIDE for our city: For two years in a row, New Haven has received a score of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index (MEI) — a comprehensive assessment of LGBTQ+ equality in the areas of municipal law, policies, and services that is conducted by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. In addition, New Haven had the added distinction of being one of four spotlighted cities of the 500+ cities that are evaluated in the MEI report this past year!

Press conference | GOOOAL! Mayor Elicker, Superintendent Negrón Celebrate Completion of New Haven Counts Empower Soccer League and Accomplishments of the New Haven Tutoring Initiative for this School Year ⚽

The New Haven Tutoring Initiative (NHTI) is a citywide collaborative effort between the City of New Haven, New Haven Public Schools, and 19 other nonprofit community and educational organizations dedicated to strengthening children's math and literacy skills by providing free high-dosage afterschool and summer tutoring that complements the instruction students receive at New Haven Public Schools. NHTI first launched in June 2023 and has grown every year having served nearly 2,900 students across 35 school and community sites this year to date. In addition, this school year, for this first time, academic tutoring was paired with extracurricular sports enrichment for participating upper elementary and middle school students through the creation of the New Haven Counts Empower Soccer League. Over 200 student athletes across 15 schools participated in the league, which included added day of weekly afterschool soccer practice and twice monthly soccer matches in the fall and spring. Friday marks the conclusion of the spring season with playoff matches among eight school teams.

In the newly approved city budget, Mayor Elicker and the Board of Alders allocated $1 million dollars to continue the NHTI program for next school year. Approximately 900 students are anticipated to be enrolled in summer tutoring with NHTI.

Since the founding of our nation in 1776, there are those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms and country.

Today, we remember and honor the individuals and generations of Americans who have lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

We also hold close all our military families who have lost a loved one in service to our nation and those who are actively deployed and stand in harm's way today.
