❤️🚑 A Partnership That Saved a Life 🚔❤️

We often talk about the importance of preparedness, training, and community partnerships. Today, we were reminded just how powerful those efforts can be.

Earlier today, one of the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) donated to the New Haven Police Department through our partnership, made possible by the generous support of local businesses, was used during a medical emergency involving an individual experiencing a cardiac event.

A New Haven Police Officer quickly recognized the emergency, deployed the AED, and provided immediate life-saving care until additional emergency personnel arrived. Because of the officer's swift actions, training, and access to this critical equipment, a life was saved.

This is exactly why East Central Fire & EMS partnered with the New Haven Police Department and our local business community to place AEDs into the hands of first responders. In a cardiac emergency, every second matters, and having life-saving equipment readily available can make the difference between life and death.

We are incredibly proud of the officer involved and thankful for the dedication shown in a critical moment. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the local businesses whose generosity helped fund this initiative. Their commitment to public safety made a real difference today.

Today, a family gets more time with their loved one. That is the true impact of community partnership.

🚒 TRAINING THIS WEEK: AUTO EXTRICATION & STABILIZATION 🚒

Training never stops at East Central Fire & EMS.

Tuesday night, volunteer crews from Stations 2 and 5 joined staff firefighters and medics from Stations 1 and 3 for hands-on training focused on vehicle stabilization and auto extrication.

Crews worked through several realistic scenarios involving multiple types of vehicles, practicing the skills needed to safely stabilize damaged vehicles, gain access to patients, and coordinate rescue operations.

Training together allows our staff and volunteer members to strengthen communication, improve teamwork, and become more familiar with the equipment and techniques they may need when a real emergency occurs.

When seconds matter, preparation matters. These training nights help make sure our crews are ready to work as one team when our community needs us most.

Overnight, crews were dispatched to a trailer fire. The trailer was vacant, and upon arrival, crews found it fully involved with little to no risk of exposure to nearby structures.

Responding units included East Central Engine 11, Engine 41, Engine 261, Tanker 13, Battalion 40, Medic 265, and Southwest Engine 151, Engine 101, and Battalion 50. Crews brought the fire under control within 20 minutes.

During the incident, Allen County departments worked together to ensure coverage in our area. Battalion 90 and Fire 266 coordinated staffing for East Central and had a volunteer crew staffing Tanker 124 and Monroeville staffed Engine 32, which were placed on standby at our Central Station. Northeast Engine 141 was placed on standby in Woodburn, while Hoagland Fire Department staffed their station to provide coverage for the east side of the county.

We would like to thank our neighboring departments and volunteers for their assistance and commitment to maintaining coverage throughout the incident.

🚒 A BIG THANK YOU to the residents and staff of Cedarhurst Senior Living for helping our crews with a recent simulated mass-casualty incident (MCI) training!

Training like this is incredibly important to the fire and EMS service. A mass-casualty incident can involve multiple patients, limited resources, and rapidly changing conditions. These exercises give our crews the opportunity to practice critical skills such as patient assessment and triage, communication, teamwork, resource management, and making quick decisions under pressure.

While we hope we never have to put these skills to use during a real large-scale emergency, preparation is key. Realistic, hands-on training helps our firefighters and EMS personnel identify challenges, strengthen their response, and be better prepared when our community needs us most.

Having members of our community participate makes that training even more valuable and realistic.

🚍🎒 BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY 🎒🚍

School is starting back, and that means our morning and afternoon roads are about to get a lot busier!

East Central Fire & EMS reminds everyone to take a little extra time and stay alert:

🚌 Watch for school buses and obey their warning lights and stop arms.
🚸 Be alert for children at bus stops and crosswalks.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.
🐢 Slow down in school zones and residential areas.
⏰ Give yourself a few extra minutes so you’re not rushing.

A few seconds of patience behind a school bus could help save a life.

Tonight, East Central Fire & EMS joined the New Haven, Police Department, Haven Police K9 Unit, and New Haven Police and Fire Communications at Schnelker Park for the 2026 National Night Out!

National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to strengthen relationships between first responders and the communities they serve. More than four decades later, it continues to bring neighbors, families, police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and other community partners together.

Firefighters from Bases 10, 40, and 120 spent the evening meeting attendees and giving them the opportunity to spray a fire hose, receive an introduction to CPR, and get an up-close look at the apparatus our crews brought, including East Central’s historic 1925 Studebaker!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and helped make this a fun and memorable evening. Events like National Night Out remind us that strong communities are built by working, learning, and spending time together!

**Training Notice**

Crews will be conducting simulation training at Cedarhurst this week at **9:00 AM** and **1:00 PM**.

If you see multiple emergency vehicles at the facility during those times, please be aware that it is part of a scheduled training exercise. There is no emergency situation.

East Central Fire & EMS is proud to announce the presentation of seven Automated External Defibrillator's (AED's) to The New Haven Police Department as part of East Central Fire and EMS' ongoing initiative to place lifesaving equipment in patrol vehicles throughout the community.

This initiative is designed to expand access to critical emergency medical equipment and improve response capabilities during sudden cardiac emergencies. By equipping police officers with AEDs, lifesaving care can be brought to those in need as quickly as possible when every second counts.

Officers are often among the first emergency responders to arrive on scene. Having immediate access to an AED can significantly enhance emergency response efforts by providing rapid intervention during cardiac-related emergencies.

Through this collaborative effort, AEDs have been placed in New Haven Police Department vehicles, expanding the availability of emergency cardiac care throughout the community. The initiative reflects the shared commitment of East Central Fire and EMS and the New Haven Police Department to improving public safety and emergency preparedness.

East Central Fire and EMS extends its sincere appreciation to the community partners and donors whose support helped make this initiative possible. Contributors recognized on the project include
FDC Emergency Services, Holler Tax & Accounting, Ehle Services, Bars Inc., 3 Pals Pub, Challenge Tool, Home Lumber of New Haven, Inc., and Koester's Body & Frame Shop.
