We had an amazing group of volunteers at our Hillside Family Shelter this past Saturday! They worked hard to clean out a shelter unit, paint hallways, and prepare for a new playground to be installed (part 2 coming soon). Today is National Donut Day, which gives us a chance to thank CCA's Board Chair, Sherwin, for all that he does for CCA— including bringing donuts (and fruit) to the CCA main office every other Friday for all the staff! He never forgets the apple cinnamon sugar, jelly, glazed coffee roll, and blueberry muffin—some staff favorites. Thank you to Sherwin and all our other wonderful Board members for ALL that you do to support CCA's mission.

Even though Mental Health Awareness Month just passed, we wanted to showcase Itsuannette Canales and her in-house services to our heads of household at our New HOPE Housing site. Through Stand Counseling and Coaching, Itsu blesses our families and moves us forward. In a couple weeks, she will be presenting on practical tools on anxiety, depression, and emotional wellness at our Tenants' Meeting. Thank you Itsu for sharing your skills and showing compassion and care!

We’re excited to introduce the amazing interns currently on our team!

Emma is a rising senior at Yale University pursuing a B.A. in Political Science with an Education Studies Certificate. Through the Yale President’s Public Service Fellowship, Emma is interning with CCA’s Advocacy and Education Project and bringing a strong passion for education, public service, and advocacy to our work.

Kayla is currently studying social work at UConn and hopes to work in a hospital setting in the future. She is working closely with our Family Coaches in the Hillside Family Shelter, and we’re excited to have her talents supporting our work this season.

Terrell is currently pursuing his MSW at Arizona State University and hopes to do clinical work with adults in the future. This summer and fall, he’s supporting our housing team and helping serve families with care and compassion.

We’re grateful to have Emma, Kayla, and Terrell on board and can’t wait to see all they accomplish!

What an honor to join your students and staff at this amazing event. It’s clear your students and teachers put so much work and creativity into making these wonderful presentations and beautiful dances. My staff at Christian Community Action, Inc. and I were honored to be at your assembly!

At our AAPI assembly last week we were pleased to honor Charmain Yun, the Executive Director of Christian Community Action, Inc. with our AAPI Heritage Month Community Leadership Award. This organization in our community provides help and hope to many students, families, and neighbors by providing emergency housing, a diaper bank, food, and other services and advocacy groups. Congratulations Mrs. Yun and thank you for all you do!

Some CCA staff attended CT Coalition to End Homelessness 23rd Annual Training Institute for a valuable time of hearing from colleagues, experts, and even our CT Commissioners of Dept of Housing and Dept. of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Our very own Fateria Sheats, Landlord Engagement Specialist, helped lead a seminar entitled “From Placement to Stability”.

Our staff enjoyed a rejuvenating mid-year retreat last Friday! Thank you to Incarnation Camp and Conference Center for your hospitality and Tirzah Kemp at the New Haven Department of Community Resilience for facilitating conversation. We are grateful for these opportunities to reconnect and recharge, to continue the daily work of providing help, housing and hope to families in New Haven!

This weekend, we’re celebrating moms everywhere!

Thanks to our friends at Wealth Beacon Group WBG and the City of New Haven’s Department of Housing and Homelessness, we’re able to give Mother’s Day gifts to all of the moms in our housing programs this year! Plus, we’re celebrating Mother’s Day tomorrow with a brunch for members of Mothers and Others for Justice. Happy Mother’s Day weekend!
