In 2022, over 70,000 people leaving Burning Man created a 9-hour, 14-lane traffic jam across the Nevada desert, with tens of thousands of vehicles crawling through dust and heat.
Dubbed the “Burning Man Exodus,” the exit became an endurance test, with some stuck for nearly half a day. Temps soared, engines overheated, and the only road out of Black Rock City turned into a survival line.

This is lake Lake Peigneur. Before November 20, 1980 it was smaller and had a maximum depth of about 10 feet (3m). That little area to the left where you see Rip Van Winkle Garden was a larger Jefferson Island. Thanks to a miscalculation on where an oil rig was supposed to drill that caused the workers to drill into the salt mine below we can see just how powerful flowing water can be. The resulting maelstrom increased the lake by 65 acres (0.236km²) and the new depth is 200 feet (61m). The flow into the mine was so great the Delcambre Canal reversed flow sucking water from Vermilion Bay into to the mine creating a temporary 164 foot water fall, tallest in Louisiana, and the rapid air pressure build up inside the mine created a 400 foot geyser when it released. Amazingly no human lives were lost that day because everyone was able to escape including a guy who picked a bad day to go fishing.

It blows my mind that the pictured area (Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex) has the same population as the Greater London area...

(21.3407021, 16.4315343) - Not sure what to make of this one. On some images it’s there, and on others it’s like it’s been cleaned up. The light on this image is perfect and clear, but on others satellite images there are dark shadows that make it difficult to see properly.
Ok, so I would like to admit this was in fact an April fools. I hope nobody took offense or was negatively affected by my post. I hope that I didn’t breach any rules or leave myself liable for any sort of ban. I sincerely hope that you all found the humour in my post and I wish you all a happy April fools day and I wish you all the best.

At Saturn's north pole, the atmosphere has arranged itself into a perfect hexagon.

Not approximately hexagonal. Not vaguely six-sided. A geometrically precise storm structure 30,000 kilometers wide — large enough to contain Earth — with straight edges, sharp corners, and a rotating vortex locked at its center. First observed by Voyager in the 1980s and studied in exhaustive detail by Cassini over 13 years, the hexagon has remained stable for as long as we have been able to observe it.

The shape emerges from jet streams — atmospheric flows at different speeds creating a standing wave pattern that locks the six-sided structure in place. Laboratory experiments with rotating fluids can reproduce the basic geometry. Spin a tank of water at the right speed, introduce the right velocity gradient, and a polygon emerges naturally at the boundary.

What the laboratory cannot reproduce is Saturn's version. The stability. The scale. The decades of continuous existence without the structure distorting or dissipating the way laboratory analogs eventually do. The hexagon changed color during Cassini's mission — from blue to gold as Saturn's seasons shifted — but the geometry held.

No land masses to anchor it. No solid surface beneath it. Just atmospheric physics, operating at planetary scale, producing something that looks like it was drawn with a compass.

On gas giants, even the weather can be perfect. 🪐
