Urgent Call to Action: Stop the Crackdown on Connecticut’s Preexisting Cannabis Market!
A new bill, HB 7181, is proposing a major increase in enforcement against the unregulated cannabis market. If passed, this bill will put thousands at risk—caregivers, legacy providers, and community members—by allowing aggressive police crackdowns, massive fines, and the seizure of cannabis, products, and even cash from those operating outside the state’s strict licensing system.
What This Bill Does:
Creates a new state-wide Cannabis and H**p Enforcement Task Force with broad powers to investigate, raid, and shut down unlicensed cannabis operations.
Authorizes local police to act as state enforcement officers to crack down on the preexisting cannabis market.
Allows cities to shut down locations where unlicensed cannabis is being sold and seize products, cash, and assets without due process.
Imposes extreme fines—$30,000 per violation, per day—for anyone selling cannabis without a state license.
Targets property owners by fining landlords $10,000 per day if they knowingly allow unlicensed cannabis sales on their property.
Raises criminal penalties, making certain cannabis sales a felony.
Who Is at Risk?
Legacy providers and caregivers who have been helping patients access cannabis for years.
Medical cannabis patients who rely on these sources for affordable and accessible medicine.
Property owners and landlords who could face heavy fines for unknowingly renting to unlicensed cannabis operators.
Consumers who may lose access to cannabis outside the corporate dispensary system.
