Great work Officer Pope and East Central Fire/EMS!

On 8/28/26 East Central Fire/EMS Territory was dispatched to Sanko Gosei for a worker who was unconscious and not breathing. NHPD officers responded to the scene and arrived prior to the East Central EMS crew. Officer Pope placed his AED on the patient and was able to deliver 1 shock and then he performed CPR until EMS crews arrived. A short time later, the patient regained his pulse and was transported to the hospital. The AED that Officer Pope used was placed in his vehicle recently after East Central was able get donations from local businesses that made it possible to purchase some AEDs and place them New Haven Police vehicles. In the case of cardiac arrest, early CPR and defibrillation save lives and today officer Pope was able to demonstrate that with his quick response and treatment.

Graduation day!

These men have spent the last 16 weeks down at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Officer Bar, Officer Schwarz and Officer Wade all completed their training and graduated. We are very proud of the work they have put it and look forward to continuing their training. All three Officers will jump right into field training in the next few days. It won’t be long before they are out patrolling the great New Haven community!

Reserve Police Officer Hiring Process

The New Haven Police Department is accepting applications for its upcoming Reserve Police Officer hiring process. Individuals who have previously submitted an application will automatically be included in the upcoming selection process and do not need to submit a new application. Those interested in being considered should submit a completed application no later than September 18, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications:
-At least 21 years of age
U.S. citizen
-High school diploma or equivalent
-Valid driver’s license
-Good moral character
-No disqualifying criminal history
-Ability to successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation
-Ability to meet applicable physical, medical, and psychological requirements
-Ability to successfully complete all required law enforcement training and certification’s

Reserve Police Officers serve an important role within the New Haven Police Department and provide valuable support to the department and the community we serve.

Individuals interested in serving their community as a member of the New Haven Police Department Reserve Division are encouraged to apply.

The New Haven Police Department to increase impaired driving enforcement ahead of Labor Day New Haven As summer winds down, New Haven PD is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) to increase patrols and conduct sobriety checkpoints as part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement campaign, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Through the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP), an ICJI initiative that provides federal funding for local traffic safety enforcement, officers statewide will work overtime beginning August 19 through September 7, 2026, to identify and stop motorists under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“Our officers are seeing the consequences of impaired driving far too often,” said Cpl. Jackson. “As we enter the final weeks of summer, we’re asking every driver to make responsible decisions. A sober ride isn’t just the safest option—it’s the choice that saves lives.”

Preliminary data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) shows that in 2025, nearly 23% of Indiana’s traffic fatalities involved alcohol, and more than 41% involved drug impairment.

“Impaired driving continues to be one of the most serious threats on our roadways, and we’re focused on reducing these tragedies through education and enforcement,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “This year’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign reminds everyone that impaired driving is preventable. When you choose a sober ride, you’re helping protect your community and ensuring everyone makes it home safely.”

In Indiana, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, although drivers can be arrested at any BAC level if an officer believes they are impaired.

Have a Plan Whether You're Driving, Riding, or Hosting:

· Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.

· Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they've been drinking.

· If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.

· If you see an impaired driver, call 911. Always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign, administered by ICJI, is supported with federal traffic safety funds provided by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
