What a great way to wrap up another summer of Parks & Recreation in New Haven! ☀️🎶

Tonight officially brings our summer programming to a close as we begin looking ahead to some of our favorite fall events - including Lions Tailgate at the Park on Sunday, October 11th and our annual Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 24th! Check out the "Events" tab on the Village page for more information! 🎃🏈

Our Music in the Park series finished on a high note tonight with an awesome performance by Black Lake Band!

I want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us throughout the summer for our Slow Rolls, Movies in the Park, and Music in the Park events. One of my favorite parts of these programs is seeing so many familiar faces week after week. There’s something special about watching neighbors, families, and friends come together and simply enjoy our community - and this summer was no different.

I also want to sincerely thank our Parks & Recreation Committee for the time and energy they put into hosting these events, our dedicated DPW crew for all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything running smoothly, and the New Haven Fire Department for always being there to help ensure our events are safe and enjoyable for everyone.

And, of course, thank you to the many members of our community who stepped up, pitched in, and helped along the way. So many nights really did feel less like a community event and more like one big family gathering.

I only wish we could keep the weekly summer fun going all year long!

Thank you, New Haven, for another great summer!

Now… bring on fall! 🍂

Summary of tonight's Council meeting:

Under unfinished business:
- Council agreed to give the property owner of the funeral home on Main Street one more month to complete exterior work as a deadline before taking the matter back to Court for condemnation. This has been an ongoing issue and month after month we've been requiring the property owner to get the work done. Unfortunately, too little is accomplished each month.
- Council approved a proposal from Revize to redesign the Village of New Haven's website. This will bring the website into the latest modern technology and ensure that we're compliant with the latest accessibility requirements.
- Council majority voted to deny the Lenox Township fireworks invoice. At the June 2025 council meeting, Lenox Township requested agreement to hold the fireworks show on 4th of July 2026 as part of the 250th celebration. At that time, Council approved "partnering with Lenox Township to move the fireworks to Lenox Township for 4th of July 2026." Lenox Township assumed that the Village would pay for our half of the invoice as they've done for years, but tonight the Council voted to not pay for our share of the fireworks. I was the sole no vote as I felt like we owed it to the Lenox Township residents to pay for our share of the fireworks, but the rest of the Council which was present tonight voted against payment. Lenox Township moving the fireworks to the 4th of July required us to host our own fireworks show on July 11th, in which we paid in full. Council felt it was fair that Lenox Township paid for their own fireworks while the Village paid for our own fireworks.
- Council passed a few zoning amendments in regards to General Business District and General Business, plus the definition of microbusiness. We received zero feedback during the past month while it was posted, and Council approved accordingly.
- Council approved the purchase of a 2026 Ford F-250 to be utilized by the DPW Superintendent for daily usage instead of him using his personal vehicle.
- Last but not least under Unfinished Business, Council approved the re-paving of the municipal parking lot at the Village Hall because it's crumbling apart. Approval was for moving forward with concrete paving instead of asphalt, which should hopefully hold up much better.

Under New Business:
- Glass block replacements were approved for the Lions Club which was recently vandalized and the DPW cold storage building.
- An FYI was given to Council that our agenda and meeting management software was going to be updated at zero additional cost to the Village.
- Council formally appointed Matt Benoit to the vacant Village Council seat. Over the years, Matt has proven himself to be a dedicated resident who has attended almost every single Village Council and Planning Commission meeting since moving into the Village. Additionally, Matt attends the weekly Parks & Recreation events like Slow Roll and Music in the Park, which was recognized by council tonight with his appointment. Congratulations to Mr. Benoit for his appointment and we're looking forward to having him behind the table moving forward!
- Ray Tuttle was formally recognized as our Building Official tonight as he's been serving unofficially in the capacity this year.
- Council ackowledged that there are 2 positions open for the Housing Commission, to be posted and hopefully filled.

Wow - what a night for a Slow Roll through the Village! It's so awesome to see so many families and their kiddos coming out and biking (or carting LOL) around town to celebrate summer! Huge thank you to everyone who came out tonight and a very sincere thank you to New Haven Fire Department and Macomb County Sheriffs Office for supporting our slow roll events!

Update Friday, July 3rd: Paving at the tracks has been delayed to Monday, July 6th. The railroad crossing is now expected to re-open on Tuesday, July 7th.
