♥️NATIONAL CPR & AED AWARENESS WEEK♥️| June 1-7

In the United States, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals every year, and tragically, 90% are fatal. When someone’s heart stops, immediate CPR and AED use can double or even triple their chance of surviving.

During National CPR & AED Awareness Week, we recognize the importance of learning these lifesaving skills. Being prepared to act in an emergency can make all the difference for a family member, friend, or coworker.

As pictured above, our department kicked off our first series of CPR trainings with the staff of New Haven Pediatrics and local camp counselors to prepare them for emergencies that may come their way.

Interested in getting your staff trained in Basic Life Support, CPR/AED, or Stop the Bleed? To help make these trainings accessible, we offer a community rate. To request a training for your group, visit NHVHealth.org/emergency or call 203-946-8181.

📢📢NEW REPORT: New Haven's 2025-2026 Community Health Assessment (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

The citywide CHA is a project to better understand the state of public health in our city. Results from the CHA inform the CHIP, a guide for deciding on our funding, program, and collaboration efforts for the next three to five years. The CHIP is our roadmap and will help us focus our collective energy on three urgent priorities:

🩺Healthcare Access and Navigation
❤️‍🩹Substance Use and Behavioral Health
🏢Housing Stability and Affordability

Thank you to the over 600 residents and partner organization leaders for sharing your stories and perspectives through the community survey, focus groups, and interviews. Your lived experience is the foundation of this work.

This plan belongs to the community. We are committed to keeping you updated on our progress and invite you to join us in bringing these priorities to life. Together, we are building a more equitable New Haven.

This past Saturday, our Lead Program participated in Public Health Day at the Yale School of Public Health in partnership with Yale Pathways to Science. This event brought together high school students from across the community to explore careers and real-world applications in public health through interactive workshops.

Students rotated through 3 of 7 workshops based on their interests, allowing for smaller groups and hands-on learning. In “Protecting New Haven’s Kids: Lead Poisoning & Community Health,” they used real lead testing equipment and learned how data, environmental investigations, and problem-solving inform public health—while exploring careers in environmental health, inspection, and community outreach.

The workshop was led by Glenda Buenaventura, Deputy Director of Environmental Health, alongside Marjeta Gjoni, Lead Community Health Worker, and Lead Inspectors Kengli Marquez Perez and Edgar Martinez.

Thank you to the Yale School of Public Health for organizing and hosting this event, and to the students for their enthusiasm and curiosity!
