Halloween originated as a Celtic festival called Samhain when the line between dead and living was blurred, so the dead could return for the night. The holiday was turned into a more Christian holiday when, in the 8th Century, November 1st was declared All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day), so the night before was All Hallows' Eve and eventually Halloween. These images are all from the New York Times over the years and show the various aspects of Halloween in the United States.
