Library curator Donald Gallup photographed in the Yale Collection of American Literature with boxes containing Gertrude Stein's papers in July 1947. These photographs were taken by Life Magazine photographer Frank H. Bauer. In 1947, following Stein's death, Alice B. Toklas sent Yale shipments that included Stein's manuscripts, books, photographs, and personal materials. Gallup became curator of the Yale Collection of American Literature in 1946 and held that position for more than 30 years.

"The Confessions of Nat Turner," published in 1831. Nat Turner, who was himself enslaved, was the leader of an anti-slavery rebellion starting on August 21, 1831. This is the first detailed account of the rebellion, documented by Thomas R. Gray, an attorney who represented several enslaved people in their trials after the rebellion. The frontispiece of Phillis Wheatley's "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral" published on September 1, 1773. Phillis Wheatley Day is observed on August 18, the day Wheatley was admitted into the Old South Meeting House congregation. Wheatley is considered the first African-American author of a published book of poetry.

Handwritten manuscripts, photographs, personal letters, and various notebooks from the Rachel Carson papers are on view as part of "Silent Springs, Windswept Seas: Rachel Carson's Environmental Vision."

The majority of the material in the collection was a bequest to Yale University in 1965; later additions were primarily gifts of Houghton Mifflin Company in 1968; Marie Rodell, Rachel Carson's literary agent, in 1973; and Lois Darling in 1983.
