"Mystery" eggs! Bird nesting season is in full swing! Sometimes we encounter eggs in our nest boxes we haven't seen before and have to catch a glimpse of an adult in order to correctly identify them. Any guesses as to what species these belong to? Hint: It's one of our summer migrants! Check the comments for the reveal.

Spring isn't just a time for bird and mammal babies; it's also a season for spiderlings! ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ

Pictured below is a female Crab Spider (Family Thomisidae) with her egg sac, hidden within the fold of a fallen leaf. Crab Spiders differ from many other spider species, in that they rarely build webs, preferring instead to use camouflage to hide and ambush their prey. This means that they have to get creative when it comes to finding a safe place to keep their eggs!

Crab Spiders favor the undersides of logs and leaves as nesting locations, and the female will stay near her clutch to keep them clean and parasite-free. A single egg sac like this can contain up to 200 eggs, which will all hatch at once in order to overwhelm and confuse any potential predators. Soon after hatching, the young spiderlings will disperse to begin their lives as solitary ambush hunters, just like their mother. While many might not call them "cute" like they would a duckling or fawn, these little spiderlings will be a vital (and, in our opinion, adorable) part of our local ecosystem!
