It was a magical, misty morning at the park today! 🌫️✨
The fog was so thick over the lake, we could not even see the shore on the other side!
It gave everything a quiet, peaceful feeling; the perfect way to start a week. The sun is making a valiant effort to shine through the morning haze, so we will have to enjoy it while it lasts!

Meet the Double-banded Scoliid Wasp (Scolia bicincta)! These solitary wasps are pollinators and not aggressive towards humans. While adult wasps feed entirely on nectar, females seek out scarab beetle larvae (grubs) beneath the soil upon which to lay an egg. Once the wasp larva emerges, it feeds on the paralyzed grub. Look for these beneficial and docile pollinators and pest control helpers on the Cutleaf Coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata) in the native bed at our restroom building!

🚧Construction Update🚧

Check out this aerial view of all the work being done at our new disc golf parking area and the Fishing Pond! As you can see, the parking area has been paved and striped, and a brand new disc golf kiosk has been installed. We have also added a new accessible tee pad, which will connect with our children's disc golf course. At the Fishing Pond, a concrete dock has been added as an accessible fishing spot, and it will assist park staff with launching our program canoes/kayaks. Exciting updates continue to develop at the park, and we look forward to sharing more with you all soon!

Funding for these improvements comes from the voter-approved 2018 Parks, Greenways, Recreation and Open Space bond. For more information on the Bond Improvement Projects, please visit our website: https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/parks-recreation-open-space/park-projects.

Let's get ready to RAAAAMBLE! 🌲🎉
Our Longleaf Ramble event is only a couple weeks away! Join us on Saturday, September 12th for a day of celebration and learning at this free family event! We have a fun-filled day planned, with plenty of activities for all ages:

🐍 See reptiles and amphibians up close and touch a snake!
🧺 Watch a Longleaf Pine needle weaving demonstration (and try it yourself)!
🖌️ Enjoy Longleaf-themed games and crafts!
🥤 Grab a sweet treat from Kona Ice of Western Wake!
🔍 See a turpentine still display and artifacts from the naval stores industry!
🌱 Pick up a free longleaf seedling while supplies last!
📖 Visit with the Wake County Public Libraries' Bookmobile!
🧑‍🚒 Try on firefighting gear and operate a water pump!
🛞 Take a scenic wagon ride through our Longleaf Forest (pre-registration required)!

With summer nearly at an end, "spider season" is just around the corner! 🕷️
We wanted to share a moment of appreciation for these wonderful weavers, as they are a vital part of our local ecosystem!

Spiders are members of the class Arachnida, along with scorpions, ticks, and mites. There is an abundance of spiders in the park and they display an array of colors, patterns, and behaviors. No matter their appearance, all spiders are important predators, feeding on insects and other small animals. A single spider can eat around 2,000 insects per year, making them excellent natural pest control!

Pictured below is a Rabid Wolf Spider (Rabidosa rabida) carrying her spiderlings on her back. Unlike most spider species, wolf spiders will carry both their egg sacs and their newly hatched babies on their backs, carrying them along as they search for prey on the ground. This "spider season", take a moment to celebrate the arrival of these crucial web spinners and maybe even give them a chance to catch some of the insects on your porch!

With the recent rain, we got plenty of calls asking about the status of our mountain bike trails! If you want a quick and easy way to know the status of our trails, be sure to check the TORC-NC trail status report (https://www.torc-nc.org/trail-status/) first for the most up-to-date information! Wet conditions can sometimes make it necessary to close the trails for visitor safety and to maintain the stability of the trails. Whenever a decision is made to open or close our trails, TORC-NC is the first place we post an update. Know before you go, and enjoy your ride at Harris Lake County Park! 🚴‍♂️

Improvements can sometimes come with unexpected growing pains! 🚧
With all the work being done on our Bond Improvement Projects our park road was taking a little bit of a beating from the heavy equipment, causing some cracks and holes to start forming!

Luckily, work crews were able to quickly tackle the problem, and have been patching up our road good as new! We want to thank these crews for their hard work, and also to thank our visitors for their patience as we strive to complete this project (along with many others)!
