BACK TO SCHOOL = BACK TO BUS SAFETY!

As students across our community head back to school, New Holland EMS wants to remind everyone to slow down, stay alert, and help keep our kids safe.

School buses are back on the roads, children are waiting at bus stops, and young drivers are returning to school. A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a tragedy.

- When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out — STOP.

- Watch carefully for children crossing the roadway or walking near bus stops.

- Give school buses plenty of room and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

- Put the phone down — especially in school zones and around bus stops.

- Leave a few minutes earlier so you aren't tempted to rush.

Parents, please also remind children to stay a safe distance from the roadway while waiting for the bus and to always make sure the bus driver can see them before crossing.

Today our crews had the honor of attending the memorial service and participating in an EMS processional and final call for Dr Fran Kratz. Dr Kratz for the past 2 decades has been a familiar face of care and compassion in the ER at Penn Medicine LGH interacting routinely with our crews bringing patients into the ER. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kratz family in their time of grief.

It’s officially “walk outside and immediately question your life choices” weather!

The heat is cranking up significantly this week, and while summer is great for BBQs and pool days, it can turn dangerous fast for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and pets.

A few simple steps can keep you from needing to call 911:

Hydrate like it’s your job! and then hydrate again. Water > energy drinks > “I forgot I drank coffee at 2pm”
Take breaks in shade or A/C, your body is not a solar panel
Pets feel it too, if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
Never leave kids or pets in vehicles, even “just a minute” turns dangerous fast
Light clothing, loose fit, and sunscreen, yes, even if you “don’t burn that easy”
Limit strenuous activity during peak heat (10am–4pm), the sun is undefeated at that hour

Watch for signs of heat illness: dizziness, nausea, confusion, heavy sweating (or no sweating), headache, or sudden weakness. Don’t tough it out, cool down and get help early.

And a big one that costs nothing but matters a lot:
Check in on your at-risk friends, family, and neighbors. A quick text or call can make a real difference on days like this.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and treat the sun like that one coworker who “just wants to talk for a minute” but somehow keeps you trapped for an hour.

If you’re hot, slow down. If you’re unsure, check in. If your dog is giving you judgmental looks from the floor tile… they’re probably right.
High temperatures can quickly become dangerous, especially for those most vulnerable in our community. Heat-related illnesses can develop rapidly, but with a few simple precautions, many emergencies can be prevented.

Last night Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR39) invited us along with Dr Jonathan Bar from Pennmed1 to join them and Weaverland Valley Fire Department for a weekly training night exercise. Last nights training event was focused on a multi vehicle accident with numerous patients entrapped. This training provided invaluable training for their firefighters and provided some of our providers a chance to see first hand some of the complications and complexities of patient care in a mass casualty setting. Thank you Garden Spot Fire Rescue for the invite!
