Honoring the True Meaning of Memorial Day

As the unofficial start of summer rolls around, it’s easy to focus on the long weekend, backyard barbecues, and spending well-deserved time with family. But here at the New Holland Fire Department, we want to take a moment to pause, reflect, and remember the true purpose of this sacred day.

Memorial Day isn’t about the sales or the picnics—it is a solemn day of remembrance dedicated to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Reflecting on Service and Sacrifice

In the fire service, we understand the concept of duty, service, and the inherent risks that come with answering a call. Yet, the selflessness of our military service members remains unparalleled. They left their homes, their families, and their communities—including small towns just like New Holland—and gave everything to protect the freedoms we enjoy every single day.

We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid. The best we can do is ensure that their names, their courage, and their sacrifices are never forgotten.

"Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay. But we can honor their memory, and we can support the families they left behind."

How We Can Honor Them Today

If you are looking for ways to meaningfully observe Memorial Day with your family today, here are a few simple ways to pay tribute:

Observe the National Moment of Remembrance: Pause for one minute of silence at 3:00 PM local time to reflect on the lives lost in service to our country.

Fly the Flag Proudly: If you have a flag at home, remember the proper etiquette for Memorial Day: fly it at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to full-staff until sunset.

Share Their Stories: If you have a loved one who gave the ultimate sacrifice, share their story with the younger generation so their memory lives on.

Support Veterans and Gold Star Families: Consider donating to organizations that support the families of fallen service members.

Thank You from NHFD

To all the families in Logan County and beyond who have lost a loved one in military service: We see you, we honor your grief, and we stand with you.

As you enjoy the rest of your day with family and neighbors, please join us in keeping our fallen heroes in your thoughts. Have a safe, peaceful, and meaningful Memorial Day.

Stay safe, New Holland.

⚠️ BLOWING DUST ADVISORY – PLEASE USE CAUTION ⚠️

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory for Logan County and the surrounding areas, in effect from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM today, May 4th.

Due to high winds and dry topsoil from recent agricultural activity, we are expecting hazardous driving conditions throughout the afternoon.
WHAT TO EXPECT:

Reduced Visibility: Visibility may drop rapidly to between 1/4 mile and 1 mile. In some areas, it may drop to near zero without warning.

Strong Winds: Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35-40 mph.

Health Precautions: Those with respiratory issues should limit time outdoors until conditions improve this evening.

DRIVING SAFETY TIPS:

If you encounter a dust storm while driving:

Pull Off the Road: Pull as far off the pavement as possible.

Stop: Turn off your lights and set your emergency brake.

Stay Off the Brake: Take your foot off the brake pedal so other drivers don't follow your tail lights and accidentally rear-end you.

Wait: Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt buckled until the dust clears.
Stay safe, New Holland! Let’s look out for one another on the roads today.
